    The Cure

    The official Cure thread.
    Any fans?
I just picked up Wild Mood Swings, my first post '80s Cure album. It got very mixed reviews, some reviewers on Amazon totally reviling the album and giving it only one star. Personally, I'm enjoying it. The more upbeat sound harks back to The Head on the Door album, and it sounds every bit as good as that.

I like The Cure a lot, but I'm not really into Wild Mood Swings. I think that Blood Flowers is their best post Wish album. And you don't have Wish, buy it now. It's really, really a great album!

To me they lost their magic after Wish.
And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

I like to call it Wild Quality Swings. Some very good songs on there, but also some absolute rubbish.

Couldn't agree more. Wish and Disintegration are two of the best pop albums ever, if not the best ever. As for The Cure and 4:13 Dream: meh.

Love so much of their output, right from 3 Imaginary Boys they had me, but other favourites are The Head On The Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, The Top, Disintegration and Wish. I agree that Bloodflowers is the best of the later albums, but I have not followed every release slavishly. Did catch their set at Bestival last year on TV, think its out as a live set too, they were on great form still. I have seen them live many times going right back to 1980, always a blast.

I've been wanting to get Wish, I have a feeling that it will get the remastered treatment soon. The Cure seem to have a thing for 21st anniversaries.

I like everything CURE up (and including) 1992's Wish. After that one they lost me...

I also lost ciontact with Cure after that one... I seem to remember one or two particularly lacklustre album in the 90's and 00's

and in my memory, Wish was their best since.... Pornography, I believe... Cure wass one of those rare 80's-related bands I did keep an eye out on during the 80's, but I was content in hearing what my younger bro made me listen to... (occasionally, I'd borrow an album, but that's it)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Maybe so. But the good tracks are really good IMO.

I have only heard a few things by the Cure and remember not liking any of it at the time. Just not my style. However, many years later I did get a chance to see the guitar player live as he was with Plant & Page and I remember he was quite good. In fact, he played most of the leads while page did his usual stage meandering all doped up.

I saw them live just after the release of Pornography and they were quite an experience... Another great album of theirs is the psychedelic influenced The Top and their return to the darker sounds of old with Disintegration, their last great album i.m.o.

Is Wish as poppy as Friday I'm In Love suggests?

Not at all. It's a very dark, yet melodic album, with Friday I'm In love as the ray of light into the dark. Oh and the title track is not that dark either (or maybe i'm confusing it with the track High) it's been many years since i listened to that album for real.

Big fan, though I admit the band has quite a bunch of clunckers. I particularly hate Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, because if subtracted to a single disc, it would've been a masterpiece. Even the worthless 4:13 Dream contains one great track.

Whole Cure-albums that are great are IMO "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", "Pornography", "Disintegration", "Wish" and "Bloodflowers". Buy those, download the highlights of the rest through Itunes.

I played Three Imaginary Boys yesterday and it was awesome.

they do have two hits compilations "galore" and "staring at the sea"and both are killer with the early one focusing on their early output and of course the other on the latter. they imo are not a album band save "disintergration". so i have gotten both comps and they seem to do the trick for me.

I and Sunhillow would have to disagree with you. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me is great too.

I have every Cure album and every Cure CD, saw them twice, once for the Pornography Tour (Which was freakin' awesome) and another time later that was not so good (Love cats...?). My favorite of theirs is 17 Seconds, which is also one of my top (10) 80's albums...

Funny when someone said that they could not get into his vocals...wonder if that person likes Rush?

Never really loved their output as a whole but think the world of Disintegration and Bloodflowers. The former is IMHO a totally perfect album with some of my favorite songs by anyone (Fascination Street, Lullaby, the cacophonous title track and the emotionally crushing Homesick) and the latter a later-day triumph with some downright beautiful songs (Where The Birds Always Sing, The Last Days of Summer and the haunting title track). I've appreciated them for these kind of deep and brooding songs as opposed to their poppy stuff like Friday I'm In Love.

Slightly OT I saw them once, on the Bloodflowers tour and it was one of the two best shows attended that year, a full three hour tour-de-force that highlighted the kind of material that I love of theirs and they were simply magnificent.

    Peace,
    Alex

One of the few '80's' bands I like. Saw them 3 times live, and they are VERY powerful and even spacerockish, not what most people would expect.
There is no such thing as a stupid question. There are, however, a lot of inquisitive idiots.
