This is a timely thread for me as I have been watching "Metal Evolution", an 11-part documentary on heavy metal. One show was about grunge and The Melvins were seen as one of the "Seattle bands" that may have partially influenced grunge. I only know them by name but the clips and interviews with these guys had me very intrigued.

"Baby, Won't You Weird Me Out" has my vote for the song of the day and if you don't listen, well, then I just don't even want to be your friend.

^^ Nice one. Need to give Freak Puke another spin.

As song of the day, I nominate:

"Dem Glücklichen legt auch der Hahn ein Ei."

Here's a recent interview with Toshi Kasai and Dale, who operate as a production team under the name of Deaf Nephews:

Cordtangler: What are some of your best practical jokes you’ve played in the studio?

Dale: Toshi, you have some good ones.

Toshi: I have a recording of a cell phone ringing that I’ve played while the band was setting up. Everyone was going crazy trying to figure out who’s phone was ringing. When Dale saw me laughing, he figured it out and punched me in the arm.

D: Toshi, what about the analog tape trick?

T: Oh yeah, when the band asked if I was ready to go, “I played my tape re-winding track and told them I just needed a minute to rewind the tape.”

CT: How long did it take them to catch-on that it was a digital recording?

T: I think about a minute. Or, when people have asked me if they can hear a playback of the end of the song. I’ll play just the last drum hit.[laughs]

D: Yeah, there is definitely a fair amount of joking around. A band will ask if they can hear a take back and we’ll reply, “listen to what”? We’ll record a really good take and then when it’s done say, “hey, did you guys want us to record that?” There is also playing a track of low-level feedback and acting like we can’t figure out where it is coming from.

CT: Speaking of Analog. Analog vs. digital. There so much talk about sound but what is your take on the way that digital has affected the process...?

    Read on....

Stag was spun. Stag was dug. Stag was pretty damn eclectic and diverse. Stag was the first but not the last. Stag was good.

Well done, Frank. I just picked up Sugar Daddy Live from Wayside (Steve's got a few of their albums on sale), and it's obliterating my early morning Moody Blues marathon quite nicely.

Can i just say that the new album 'Basses loaded' is the best thing they've done in about 6 years? Thanks. (just skip the shitty Beatles cover).

    New video

  12. #62
I really like the Beatles cover!

But, yeah, really strong album after a bit of meandering--though I'd love to hear another Melvins Lite album.

I have a buddy who is a huge Melvins fan, he's played me some of their stuff. We're going to the show on 8/22 at the Echo in Silver Lake. It's a really small club with barely enough room to fit a guitar trio on stage, really looking forward to it.
    ...or you could love

Do these Melvins people ever sleep? Dale has a solo album coming out in August:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/fe...-album-w485159

There’s also a documentary moviefilm, expected to ship in a few weeks:
“The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale” follows the band’s history, with rare behind-the-scenes footage from their early days in Washington to their multiple modern incarnations with an eye on the enduring influence they’ve had throughout their 30-year plus history. The documentary features interviews with Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Jello Biafra, Gene Simmons, Krist Novoselic, Mark Arm, J. Mascis, Josh Homme, David Yow and many more.

Saw the documentary in a cinema locally a couple of nights back.
It's terrific. Funny, warm and, most of all, extremely inspiring.

Ordered Dale's solo, the new double album, the doc and a new Melvins hoodie. I'm ready for ... something.

The new one is out. I'm finding the first disc a bit Melvins-by-numbers on first listen and the song with the Redd Kross bloke singing is actively shite. It's not a bad record though. I haven't got round to 'love' yet, but i hear it's more of a piss-about a'la Prick.

Still seeing them in Oct. Great fucking live band.

  22. #72
I really like the 'song' disc of the new one. Particularly the first song, Christ Hammer and the one before it.
Sorry, I'm out and about and don't have the track list.
I've only played it a couple of times all the way through but those are the three that grabbed me.
Needle-skipped through the second disc. Might play it at some point!

Ach! Still waiting for the Melvins album and hoodie and doc, but, hey, Crover's solo album came today! Dale writes some pretty good popish tunes! Toshi Kasai collaborates throughout. Only one listen in, but I think this is a pretty safe rec for everyone here. Plus, you get a Dale magnet if you order from him. That's win win, folks.
