Weather Report was a great band that kept evolving and reinventing itself. Some may find this odd, but my favorite two albums are the s/t debut and "Heavy Weather," for very different reasons. More recently, I've been enjoying "Live and Unreleased," a two disc compilation of various live tracks with different incarnations of the band. Among other things, there's a fantastic version of "Teen Town" on it. I think Jaco's writing style (and his playing, obviously) was a nice addition; at that point, they had three great composers on board.

Thought this thread needed some videos, from the non-Jaco periods at least...

That's the same performance as the Live in Cologne album, which I've just ordered.

Tried to find some of Miroslav playing upright with WR, but couldn't.......maybe someone else can.

Love that 1971 vid, though...I've got the DVD at home. I watched the Cologne 1983 vid last night; under-rated incarnation of the band, IMO.

The 1975 vid is from the Live in Berlin CD/DVD combo, which I also have.

Does anyone else have this? I picked up the DVD-A for $3, and it's currently listed for $99 at Amazon. It's the music of WR, reinterpreted as 'smooth jazz'.

mmmhhh!!!... a bit surprised to see HW rated much below BM in Gnosis

BM is rated at 10.37 (which sounds normal to me), but HW is rated collectively ar 9.79, which I find fairly low... Don't have a problem with MrG at 9.08 though.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I've only heard one tune from that album by John Scofield. Perhaps you might enjoy this one a bit more? Not all the tunes are WR material.

For Jaco fans, Record Store Day sees the premier of a new film, as well as a CD of demos from 1976, prior to his big three breakthrough with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell and, of course, his own self-titled debut. The audio quality isn't hi-Fi - these were, after all, demos - but you'll hear early versions of a lot of material that has become, over the decades, like an old friend....always instantly recognized and warmly welcomed.

Watch out for it! North American Music....Period! The Criteria Sessions.

Oh, there is lots of that! And of course I'm going blank at the moment. OK, a couple I really love include KBB from Japan and Ohm for the USA. I'll have to check my collection when I get home to make up for the memory lapse, and I'll send you a PM as to not derail this thread.

^Thanks Yanks. I'm about to start a thread about this, so instead of a PM you can contribute to that.

I love their 70's and 80's output. A top tier band for me.

Geez, I have both Sweetnighter and Initiate, but I never even noticed that the latter has a cover version of the WR piece.
