Unbelievable! Who still reads that mag who did in the 70's anyway . Its like asking the current readers of NME the same question . In research terms the subject population is totally unreliable !

I always considered Pink Floyd as "experimental", "art-rock", or "psychedelic rock"........I never put them in the same box I would put Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Ethos, Nektar, ELP, VdGG, or 70s Rush.......I know some readers here consider them Prog.

I think it is very interesting that these are all prog bands (in my opinion at least) and Rolling Stone always hated prog. Personally, I love every album on the list so no problem for me.

I'm shocked that anyone who reads RS these days would know anything about old Genesis. Pretty pedestrian top 10 list but at least they got a few right like Lamb, CTTE and TaaB.

Where's the Magma? Actually I'm surprised there isn't more Rush on there or maybe a Radiohead, but I guess considering it's an okay list.

My reaction is relatively the same as when they announced the results of their Top 10 progressive rock albums of all-time: I pretty much agree with all of the choices (if not in the same order), except that tracks 2-6 on 2112 are staggeringly overrated. (And I'm a Rush fanboy.)

I agree with you. Liked them a lot, never thought they were in the same ballpark.

    2112 #1? Not.
    No ELP?

I got too many issues to continue.

RUSH is the new *HIP*! Last year I doubt they would even be on the list at all.

This is far better than I expected from that mag. They are musically incompetent.
Funny thing is I still read it, but not for anything music!
I read it for the Matt Taibbi articles.

...and I like Rush. Alot! But I wouldn't put them in this top 10 list.

Good thing... seems to me...anything that keeps the concept alive in the popular imagination.

It's just a list. IMO those are all great albums. I'm somewhat surprised Rolling Stone even bothereed at all so that's a good thing. Even a little exposure helps.

Even though I'm not a huge ELP fan it's a little surprising their not on that list. During that time period they were just as big if not bigger than all the groups on that list when your talking prog. Makes me wonder what the average age was of the people polled.

    No Crimson? What the f?
Day dawns dark...it now numbers infinity.

    40% aren't even prog.

    Hemispheres deserves the spot though.

Goldmine ran a similar poll about a year ago & it's readers voted Brain Salad Surgery at #1. I would certainly give more credence to the readers of a serious collectors magazine ˇ

Ideas are more progressive than technique... AZnd Floyd were king in that category... they systematically reinvented themselves with every new album... They're probably better than all the groups you mention.

This is a 70's poll... somore Rush would mean 80's album... let's not even mention RH

Other than 2112 or Hemispheres (both over-rated, IMHO) being there instead of AFTK, the rest doesn't pose problems with me

Yeah, though I have no probs with no ELP... however no Crimson???

Ulness they don't consider ITCOTCK as 70's (it's late 69, but it's commercial life is 70's), that the major flaw in that list

Pink Floyd were very formulaic for their three prog albums DSOTM to WYWH . Great albums but they certainly didnt reinvent themselves over those three albums. Gilmour stole every blues lick known to mankind ! Other bands were pushing the envelope much more than PF . In fact i would argue they became very stale after WYWH !
