The Jefferson Airplane drummers are like the Grateful Dead keyboardists -they're all dead.

Sorry to hear this. A fine player.

He was a permanent member in 1968-69, but was uncomfortable with the constant touring routine (as well as with the hallucinogenics) and withdrew from that after a short while. But he received royalties (with Lesh) for that incredible piece of musique concrete on Anthem of the Sun, for instance, and he features heavily on both Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead.

Any word on the actual cause of death? Obviously he hit a wall at full speed, without wearing a seatbelt (which I never understand whenever I hear this kinda stuff), but witnesses say there was no screeching or tire tracks that would indicate any braking. Heart attack? Drowsed off?

    RIP Joey...

When he took overr JA's drum stool, he was often jamming with Jorma and Casady in Hot tuna... And this ffected their sound quite a bit too... definitely more of a powerhouse drummer than the jazz-inflected Spencer Dryden... During his tenure, he, Casady and Kaukonen could play as much as five to ix hours per night: Hot bTuna opening set, JA's concert and the jam sessions afterwards...
