Oh. I suppose your *joke* was lost on me, because I'm a Hammill fan.

    I actually prefer Cantrell's vocals to Staley's.

    Anyone mention Robbie Steinhart (sp?)?

I know Glenn Hughes was mentioned with Deep Purple, but how about Tommy Bolin when he was with Purple?

Clapton with Cream? (Jack handled most lead duties)

Steinhardt is a good one and I don’t think he has been mentioned. Yea Robbie had a great voice that really complimented Walsh’s voice. He usually sang lead (or co-lead) on at least a few songs on every Kansas album back in the day. Today, Billy Greer kind of fills that role. Greer can still hit the high notes that Walsh can’t anymore.

Clapton has always been a good singer, but imo to say that Clapton was/is a better singer than Bruce is like saying that Tiny Tim was a better singer than Jon Anderson.

I never made that claim. The topic is best singers who weren't lead vocalists. That doesn't mean best in the band who weren't.

I love Jack and consider him one of the best ever. As for white blues singers, (I know he's more than that), I put him up there with Gregg Allman, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, Johnny Winter, and Paul Butterfield.

Aren't you the one the told me that people are allowed to have their own opinions, Geezer? I sometimes prefer Clapton's softer tone to Bruce's rougher delivery, and that is my opinion.

I guess it's in the way you read the thread title, but I definitely can see your interpretation, Ron.

One I don't think has been mentioned is John Wesley with the touring line up of Porcupine Tree

Yeah, if it were "Better singers who weren't the lead vocalists" then I would have interpreted it differently.

As for Jack Bruce, he sounds as great as ever, IMO.

Wow, 7 pages and I think we missed a big one- Don Brewer in Grand Funk! I like his vocals way more than Mark Farner.

By American Band, wasn't Don pretty much the lead singer?

Nah, I don't think he sang more than 2 or 3 songs per album. Not really sure how it broke down at the end though. At any rate Farner was the de facto front guy.

I did early on in this thread. Of course in the early days, first couple albums, Steinhardt had a bigger vocal role. Still wasn't 50/50 though. Always a nice contrast with Steve's soaring vocals.

Didn't Robbie sing "down the road" from Song for America? Probably some others too.

Robbie sang lead on Down the Road and quite a few others: Child of Innocence, Miracles out of Nowhere, Lightning's Hand, Bring it on Back, Death of Mother Nature Suite. I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty.

Robbie also sang, and played a song A New Day Yesterday on Tull's tribute album.

I am currently enjoying 2nd Law by Muse. I dig the two tracks that Chris Wolstenholme sings on.
