Take a look if you at this YouTube Clip if like and add any additional names. I'm pretty sure I didn't see Duane Allman. There's obviously a lot of others.

Perhaps they died when they were supposed to.
Les Paul
Michael Hedges. A great talent who didn't nuke himself with drugs and alcohol.
Franz Schubert
They all die too young, don't they?
If vocalists count as musicians, and they should (imho), then I'll go with Mike Baker of Shadow Gallery and Andrew 'Mac' McDermott of Threshold.

I wonder how they died? - not to be morbid. I found the above videos very striking. Alcohol and drug abuse was the cause in the overwhelming number of instances, followed by suicide. I'm a really huge fan of Keith Moon, like thousands/millions, and there's an excellent and sympathetic 50 minute video tracking his career and death. Such a shame, immensely talented, a great guy, and dead so young. I think the spotlight and riches causes extreme drug use and then a downward spiral. I likely miss Duane and Keith the most.
What's considered too young? Under 60?
I guess it's a relative question on how we view aging. I think it's a greater tragedy when a great musician (e.g., I'll play the same note with Duane Allman) dies in their 20s or 30s compared to someone who has a fuller life till 60. Now this is really a silly argument on my part because we should ultimately value all life as others in this thread have indicated.
Dee Murray. Under appreciated bassist for Elton John during his salad days. 3 April 1946 - 15 January 1992 of cancer.

This thread does sort of beg the question, what musician died at exactly the right time?
Tons of them in the jazz world, but perhaps the saddest because they were SO young and talented (and none of their deaths were substance abuse related) are:
Charlie Christian 25
Clifford Brown 25
Booker Little 23
Terry Kath, Rory Gallagher, Danny Gatton, Wes Montgomery to name a few guitarists
Not to sound like a total dick, but I wish some of those talentless pop tarts would die, so they can stop hogging up the news. Not only do I wish they would, but I also wish that some of the real talent could be brought back to life to rock us one more time. Then, Keith Moon really could play at the Olympics.
