The Things that Influence Your Listening.

While making my version of a chai latte this morning, I noticed my blender was giving me a recommendation for today’s listening pleasure. It got me thinking about sights or sounds that illicit certain songs or albums in your memory, like a cuckoo clock sounding makes me think of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side…, Time particularly.

What daily interactions influence your listening?

The things that influence my listening ? In no particular order...

Algorithms. Universal cosmic convergence. My neighbour's enthusiastic use of noisy engines. Boredom. The feeling of standing at the edge of a cliff, about to be swallowed by the abyss, just before I drink my morning coffee and suddenly feel like singing out of tune. Good karma. That special feeling of intriguing frustration felt after having read one of Scrotum Scissor's posts here and having failed to understand it. Bad karma. The vision of mountains coming out of the sky and standing there. Wine. People.

Random things. Youtube algorithms is one. The Skunk Baxter interview from Sean's YT channel is a recent one. I'm pretty sure I've read here on PE about a group called.....The Ultimate Spinach... What a name. I didn't know Skunk played with them so I went on a mini, Spinach binge. Good stuff. Psychy and proggy.

Hoffman Forum, IMWAN, Facebook posts, and this place. For instance, IMWAN had a new release on Esoteric Records of a Carmen box set (their 3 albums plus some bonus tracks I think I already have).

I was influenced to listen to Pink Floyd's "Pulse!"

A genuine association I have is that palm trees at night any "tropical" place like Miami always makes me want to listen to "Wish You Were Here" (the album). It's mostly because I once listened to it on headphone's sitting on my grandmother's balcony in Miami in the '80s (which was on Biscayne Bay), watching the palm trees against the darkening sky, and the blinking lights of passenger jets. I've since listened to it a couple more times when I was in similar places, and it just seems to fit to me.

At this moment I'm playing For Absent Friends - FAF out of HAL, because I thought of this group when adding something to the Whatever happened thread and this is the only album I have by them.

Growing up in a occultism environment. Subjected to people that practiced Black Magic yet believed in Jesus. A form of Manichean belief or concept. Although I never believed in any of it. Being married to my first wife ( RIP) who became involved with this cult and suffered ritual abuse ..was in and out of mental hospitals for years eventually taking her own life. All of the above has influenced my taste in music.

For the time being, I usually just listen to my collection from the beginning to the end the way I've set it up, but sometimes I listen to particular albums when there's some talk about them, being from my collection or not.

This always surprises me when I hear someone say it's what they do, but I guess it makes sense. Now I have to ask: How do you have your collection set up?
