There's a photo of a young Phil in costume in Armando Gallo's book.

Correct. He was in Oliver for nine months, until his voice broke. Funny to know that when he was six he played a lead in the pantonime Humpty Dumpty. Probably the first link with future Genesis.

Does Ninet Tayeb's one night stint as the lead singer of Steven Wilson's band count as being a prog singer?

He actually left the band to sing in and win Pop Idol and got a great career out of it, but sadly the band broke up. Great voice nonetheless and his solo stuff is worth it for that.

Utopian Field's vocalist Lars Fredriksen won the Eurovision Song Contest (then called Melodi Grand Prix) here in Norway in 1998, performing his song in the Birmingham finale that year reaching 8th place out of 25.

A decade earlier (1988) he sang on this, which btw was the very first release on the come mythical Colours Records (sporting debuts by Landberk, Änglagård, Anekdoten and much more):

"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

Does Eurovision count? Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson of Eldberg and Eirikur Hauksson of Magic Pie (both of whom are Icelandic!) both took part.

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

Amanda Somerville, who has written and recorded with progressive metal bands such as After Forever, Edguy, Kamelot, Epica, and Avantasia, finished runner-up in an American Idol tryout held in her home state of Michigan.

Oh, but if we're talking Eurovision, there's Blond!

    With Patrik Lundstrom (Ritual, Kaipa).
    And ofcourse Pain of Salvation:

Though in both cases they already were active with their bands, so it doesn't really count

Might be a bit of a stretch, or maybe just too obvious, but how about Kevin Gilbert competing in the Yamaha International Rock competition with Giraffe before going on to Toy Matinee?

Interesting. The whole Eurovison contest is not very well known here in the U.S. so had not seen those performances.

Next year the daughters of Dan Bornemark, Signe and Hjördis Bornemark, will participate to the contest. They sang on the previous album from Proportions and on the Green Asphalt-CD from their dad. So this is the other way arround, prog-singers who become known as TV-talents.

Here the trio sings Winter Nights live:

Here's the song Fading Away from the previous Proportions-album After All These Years featuring the sisters:

Eirikur took part again in 2007. Again, this is before joining Magic Pie:

This isn't counting acts that took part after their prog period (Joy Fleming of Joy Unlimited, Armando Gama of Tantra, etc.)

I love Pain of Salvation! That song is super intense too. I'd hate to be Johan during that performance, he literally hunched down under a spotlight and didn't play a single note, LOL.

"uncredited role"? He was an extra. I remember he talking about on Letterman back in the 80's (same interview where he explained where the name Sussudio came from and Dave facetiously asks "You expect people to put down their hard earned money for that?!", to which Phil responds, "Well, it worked, didn't it?"). He said they brought a busload of kids from the drama school he attended, including himself, to the theater where they show the concert scene at the end of the movie. Phil said something like "Don't look for me, because you won't find me, I tried".

But yeah, he was an actor early on. He was in a TV movie called Calamity The Cow. He said into an argument with the director so they wrote him out of most of the film, his character disappears after the first act, then reappears during the last reel to "save the day" or whatever. So when he did Miami Vice and the movie about the bank robber, that was kind of him coming full circle.

I remember that at a 21st Century Schizoid Band performance in London 20 years or so ago, Jakko introduced himself as having got the gig as the winner of 'Prog Idol'. It raised a laugh.
