Todd Rundgren's Utopia - live in Atlanta 1973

    From http://toddrundgrenarena.blogspot.fr...ater-1973.html
(go there for the links to the mp3 & flac downloads)

    Todd Rundgren’s Utopia
    Live At The Fox 1973

01 Utopia Theme [previously released on the first Utopia album]
    02 Don’t You Ever Learn ?
03 Everybody’s Going To Heaven / King Kong Reggae
    04 Sons of 1984
    05 Open My Eyes
    06 Black Maria
    07 The Last Ride
    08 Slut
    09 Couldn’t I Just Tell You ?

"This is so incredible… selfishly because I was there. November 8 1973 (and if you dispute the venue & the date then you are dead wrong).
Todd opens up with just himself (and piano) on stage accompanied with music soundtrack. He goes through his ballads and hits with out flaw and with my first sign of his genius & humor. A intermission… and the BOOM… playing in front of us, in full band ensemble, is Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. I HAVE NOT BEEN THE SAME SINCE.
And that’s what we have here captured professionally. The Todd Rundgren’s Utopia set. The opening song (Utopia Theme) of course was recorded in it’s entirety for the 1974 Utopia premier release. And the rest is just Heaven. We hear ‘Open My Eyes’ the incredible Nazz tune that was way ahead of it’s time. It’s here in precise sound and performance. ‘Don’t You Ever Learn’ and The Last Ride’ sent Atlantan’s scurrying to find the album in which these songs were on, except it wasn’t released yet! They had me singing ‘SLUT’ all the home from the Concert…and well the rest?
Well you take a listen and tell me what you think. This is absolutely essential! WhooHoo! re-masters it to it’s finest people! Everybody has to has this re-mastered version…. ESSENTIAL" (T. Warren)

NB : presently, the links don't work.
Is this legit ? Is there going to be a CD version ?

I prefer Utopia playing Utopia material.

Which is why side 2 of Another Live is a washout for me after the great "Mr. Triscuits" which isn't even its real name. Pretty sporting of Todd to re-title someone else's song with a goofy title.

This one would lose me after the "Utopia" theme. People always argue with me here about this here, but my copy of TR's UTOPIA, original vinyl, only lists the song as "Utopia" (no "theme") on both the jacket and label.

If I could post pics I would prove it. But it's the truth.

I would consider Sons of 1984, Don't You Ever Learn and Last Ride to be Utopia material, since they were band songs that just got used on a solo album.

    Somebody's wrong, that's for sure.

    From Wiki...

Todd Rundgren's Utopia is the debut album by the band Utopia. Rundgren (who was primarily a pop musician at the time) had decided to delve into progressive rock. Putting together several musicians, including three keyboardists, the album covers a variety of styles including funk, jazz, classical and even avant garde music.

The first track, Utopia Theme, was recorded live at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia on April 25th, 1974, Not November 8, 1973 as has been previously believed. The November date was mistakenly placed on the Retrorock radio show that was broadcast in 1982 that includes "Utopia Theme" from the Todd Rundgren's Utopia LP as well a portion of that concert.

The set list is also proof that the November 1973 date is incorrect. The songs "The Last Ride", "Everybody's Going To Heaven/King Kong Raggae" "Sons Of 1984(Except for the recording of in August 1973)" and "Open My Eyes" were not in the set lists for the 1973 tour. These tunes were new for the 1974 tour.

First of all, Utopia Theme was heavily overdubbed, wasn't it? (I have no idea really, but it *sounds* like it was)

Secondly - not much of a point in seperating what's Utopia and what's Todd at ths point is there?

I was at the show, and I do believe it was in the Spring. We were waiting in the large foyer between the box office and the front doors waiting when we saw Todd climb up on some people's shoulders to yell at everyone to "move back" because some people at the doors were getting crushed. It was relatively warm then. Todd wasn't wearing a shirt. It usually is much cooler in Atlanta in November.
As for the Utopia Theme (I believe it is listed as that on the album cover), I can assure you there were NO overdubs. The band had three keyboardists, bass, Todd on "The Fool" SG, and drums. It sounded just as slick live as it does on the album. The only thing you miss on the album is the rear quad speakers effect during the sequencer break before the lead vocal.
BTW, I found a copy of that RETROROCK CD recently at a used CD store. It's really not very impressive. It doesn't even include the entire Utopia Theme.
If there was a part of that show I would love to hear, it is the part I missed after 10:30, when I had to leave. I heard from someone else who was there that it lasted until about 12:30.
We left about 1/4 way through The Ikon. It sounded fantastic.

Nope. And it sounded remarkably the same when played the band (minus two members!) on the reunion tour.

I was at the Another Live show on Long Island and always hoped for a double album release, which didn't happen.
If anyone knows where the full show is available, if it is, I'd be eternally grateful.

Having compared the samples with the already available versions, it appears that these "new" releases are merely bootleg recordings, only remastered to sound a bit louder. They are most likely not taken from the original tapes, they were found on the internet. Nice try.

I have a very vague remembrance of being at that show, but things are a bit foggy these days.

These recordings originated from me. They are the best of the best of these recordings. They been picked from serious collections from around the globe. They are either first generation tapings or from the first vinyl scripts (as in the acetates for 'DJ Promo Only Not For sale'). This is all on the level folks. Check out "The Library' at: http://trconnection.com/todd/arcd-r . Having said all that, YES they're re-mastered. By professional well known LA technicians I might add. Yes they are polished up and the phonics are at their finest. It don't get no better than these. These final versions are approved by Todd Rundgren and Eric Gardner. We did not just make up the title 'Todd Rundgren Archives'. They really are. I'd love to chat with you 'off thread'.... if you'd like; Unclemeat. Maybe it would be of some clarification to you.

And Todd is ok with them being sold on a blog?

  17. #17
Thanks for your useful comments, Warren. I stand corrected.
(This would imply that Todd does not have the original multitrack tapes for the Atlanta '73 concert, although "Utopia theme" on the first TR's Utopia LP comes from that show).

Do you guys/gals consider OOPS! Wrong Planet a prog album or a rock album? I haven't heard it since 1978,but I recall I wasn't very impressed at the time.

It's a rock/pop album. The prog ended with Ra.

So, are we now to assume that Wiki is wrong about the 74 date? And if so, wouldn't someone with better knowledge revise the entry? Also, the blog link on the OP shows the date as Nov 11, not Nov 8.

    Hey buddy,
No Todd does not have the tapes of the rest of show. Yes 'The Utopia Theme' of course. But 'these segments/tunes that are available to the collectors world now were done by a remote Recording Comany. At the time (November 8 1973), 96Rock FM Radio in Atlanta was instrumental in the recordings. Then they were bought by somebody who bought them from somebody. And then, to further confuse us, they surfaced in the '80s Radio Broadcast world through "Retro-Rock" (as we all know it) and the 'pieces' that were actually broadcasted were mixed by several sources to really confuse listeners with some banter about another time period for Todd (They mention Utopia & video efforts circa 1980). All very confusing and drawn out isn't it. I'm sorry folks.
    Warren

It’s pretty much a straight rock album, though “The Marriage of Heaven & Hell” is weird and sectional enough to be prog-adjacent. Apart from that, “Love in Action” and maybe “Love Is the Answer,” I thought it was pretty poor songwise, though, their next few albums (excepting Swing to the Right and maybe Deface the Music) had much stronger songwriting. And Adventures in Utopia had a couple of proggy numbers in “The Road to Utopia” and “Caravan.”
