    R.I.P. Chick Corea

    Wow. Another massive loss.

From his official FB page just now:

It is with great sadness we announce that on February 9th, Chick Corea passed away at the age of 79, from a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently.

Throughout his life and career, Chick relished in the freedom and the fun to be had in creating something new, and in playing the games that artists do.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a great mentor and friend to so many. Through his body of work and the decades he spent touring the world, he touched and inspired the lives of millions.

Though he would be the first to say that his music said more than words ever could, he nevertheless had this message for all those he knew and loved, and for all those who loved him:
“I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.

“And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly—this has been the richness of my life.”

Chick’s family will of course appreciate their privacy during this difficult time of loss.

I am absolutely stunned. I am heartbroken. He was an idol since I got Now He Sings, Now He Sobs way back when I still a teenager when it first came out. I met him, have letters from him, and I am completely at a loss here.

I just listened to the first RTF live album this afternoon while my wife was out and I had some time to myself to really crank it. An hour and a half later, the news breaks that Chick is gone. I just can't believe it.

NP: Hymn To The Seventh Galaxy - my favourite.

These sad announcements are happening all too frequently.
The best of the best gone forever, but thank goodness we have their music left behind in many formats for us and generations to follow to continue to listen to their wonderful creativity and mastery of their instruments.

Thank you Chick for all the wonderful music you've given us during your lifetime here. <3

Sad. Well, he was busy nearly up to the end. I remember seeing a lot on Facebook/Instagram last year about the online music school he set up to keep going during Covid.

Wow, shocking and terribly sad. I love his classic period RtF stuff. Glad I got to see them on their reunion tour in 2008. When I worked at Berklee, I got front row seats to a performance of Chick and Gary Burton at Symphony Hall. They played a piece from their Lyric Suite for Sextet called "Brasilia," which blew me away, and I bought the CD at Tower Records right after the show (remember those days?). Since I worked fairly closely with Gary, he smiled and waved to me at the intermission. Seeing this, Chick also smiled and waved at me - though he had no idea who I was - a fun memory. Without question, he will be missed on the music scene.

The original Return to Forever record (with the seagull) is one of my very favorite records of all time. I was completely blown away by it as a high school kid 40 years ago; the music was so deep, rich and mysterious. It made all my Yes and Tull records seem tame in comparison and (along with SM's Third) opened me up to jazz and its many fusions. I went from the RTF record not only to the RTF band but also to Metheny and Weather Report, and then backwards to Coltrane and Miles. But the original RTF record still delivers a trip unlike any other.

    RIP

Just five years ago I attended a wonderful birthday tribute to McCoy Tyner hosted by Chick. Now the host, the guest of honor, and participant Geri Allen are all gone.

No words...just many tears!!! What a career he had!!!

I got to see RTF (Corea, Clarke, White and DiMeola) twice...WOW both times! Got to see him solo once at the Catalina Bar And Grill in Hollywood, CA. Towards the end of the show he pointed out a woman standing in the back of the room...turns out it was Gayle Moran. She was dressed in a bathrobe and pajamas. She was there to pick him up. He told the audience how she had been to the dentist earlier that day and wasn't feeling well. But he was still able to coax her to the stage and they performed. "Someday My Prince Will Come". I got to meet Chick as well. What a night!

What a massive loss to all his millions of listeners. I saw Chick in Monteral solo about 10 years ago and the RTF reunion.
