ProgDay Regular Chris Buckley - Bad News

Some of you who have attended ProgDay may know Chris Buckley. Chris has been a regular at the festival for many years and is a friend to many of us. Last Sunday Chris suffered a massive heart attack and has been hospitalized for the past week. Dave Astley sent us the following update tonight: “Chris is still unconscious. He contracted Pneumonia soon after his surgery. This is not uncommon in these circumstances and is being treated with antibiotics. He is still being sedated, but not to the degree he was earlier. His heart is functioning naturally now, but a ventilator is necessary to maintain his ability to breathe consistently. Without question, the Pneumonia is very worrisome and is impeding his progress to the point where the medical staff are hesitant to revive him until they feel he can handle being conscious. The prognosis regarding possible brain damage is quite good, given the fact that he was treated immediately by the medics while on route to the local hospital. He was stabilized before being flown by air ambulance to Dartmouth Hitchcock Critical care unit in Lebanon NH. Pat & I were with him from Tuesday until today, when we had to return home. We are in daily contact with the hospital and will update when anything changes.” Dave added that the hospital will not respond to inquiries regarding his condition. I thought that those of you who know Chris might want to hear this news. Keep Chris in your thoughts and prayers as it sounds like he is in for quite a struggle.

I have met Chris, and all my positive thoughts are with him and his family & friends. Very sad.

I don't know him, either, but I'm sad to know a Prog fan is suffering. I hope the pneumonia clears up ASAP and he recovers fully. May I ask his age? Heart attacks are a concern for me.

Damn. Sad to hear that. Chris is a great guy - smart, funny, knowledgeable - and meeting up with him every year is one of the things that makes PD special for me.

He can't be older than fifty.

Here's a couple of pictures of him, but neither is all that good:

Chris is known by Alan, he's at most of the Gorggs, Nearfests & Baja. We were planning on going to RIOfest next year...

Man oh man. I remember first meeting Chris, along with Dave Sr. and the rest of the GG crazies at those Musical Box shows back in 2000 and onwards. After that, we'd meet at different shows/fests...what a nice man he is. I always enjoyed chatting with him. I hope that he can recover from this, and live to see more concerts in to his old age. What a fuckin' bummer.

Chris used to turn up at shows here in Cleveland back in the 90's, whenever people like Hawkwind or Gong or Nik Turner would come to town. Chris says it was actually somebody else who started it, but he was the first person I remember calling me Silver Shoes. Very nice guy, and always someone fun to hang out with. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery!

I called you silver shoes at Progday, Chris, who is originally from Ohio, said he'd met you in Cleveland. I think that Chris is too polite to called anyone anything other than their proper name, unlike me...

This is terrible news! Chris is a happy, friendly guy. It is always a pleasure to see him at ProgDay. I hope that is able to overcome this situation.

Here is the latest update from Dave Astley: "More positive news to report. Chris is out of critical care and upgraded to intermediate. He is off the ventilator and is breathing fine with just the nasal oxygen feed. He is starting to speak and is very aware of his surroundings. He is responding to touch but not commands. We are over the moon about the pace of his progress, which has taken most by surprise. It will still be a long recovery process for him, but we feel confident that we’ll have our Chris back sooner than later."
