The proposal was Paul = Frodo, Ringo = Sam, John = Gollum and George = Gandalf.

I almost wish they had done it. But who would play the other parts? Allen Klein as Sauron? Yoko Ono as Galadriel? Neil Aspinall as Aragorn?

Viv Stanshall would have made a fabulous Gandalf

Thanks, not Gandalf, but you've just cast Tom Bombadil.

That's an interesting question. It's not like LotR is a story that centers around four main guys. I think they must have had an extremely loose adaptation in mind, leaving out a huge number of characters and plot elements from the trilogy. Probably would have been only about an hour and a half, too, like the Beatles' other films. Can't see the Fabs sustaining a three-hour Lawrence of Arabia-type epic.

The original Let It Be movie (restored or renovated) is about to get released (streaming only, apparently) again on May 8th.

Whether Michael Lindsay-Hogg (the original director) is involved in the restoration process is unclear, but he was working with Peter Jackson for Get Back.

In related news, Apparently Sam Mendes is planning (for 2027) four biopics on the four Beatles (Apple consents)
4 films, 4 different POV about the same story of the most famous band ever.
