Great sounding album, and well performed. However, none of the songs really get the pulse racing, like on the earlier albums.
Oh, and I saw the special edition on eBay with a $200 price tag.

Invincible - jeez, wow!! that is epic, thankyouverymuch. That riff at 9:35 is dope... However that solo on 7empest is a bit stretched and dragging. Production is top shelf, no complaints.

Thanks to USPS my package didn't arrive until Saturday (apparently Dorian really took a toll on the processing center in Pittsburgh, who sat on my package for about 5 days before passing along ). But, it arrived safely if not swiftly and I gave it a first look/listen on the way up/down to see Morgbl @ Orion.
Package is very impressive, clever. Certainly no regrets for the $48 spent.
Musically, it's Tool. Production is stupidly pristine and the performance is super tight. On first listen, Invincible and Descending jumped out immediately but I suspect it'll engage more and more on return trips. So, I'm happy and think it's great.
Now to really dig into the album before Cult of Luna's next one drops in about 10 days because THAT is going on non-stop play for the rest of the damned year

Nice production , especially the guitars.
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone
"Production is stupidly pristine and the performance is super tight."
for some reason or another - this is the kind of thing that scares me - super tight and uber production doesnt necessarily mean its good for me - in fact - it usually ruins things. lol. Yup - I like the grizzle.
I'd say this then: if the production of the prior couple of Tool albums was too pristine for you, then you'll likely feel the same about Fear
It's a fine Tool record. Not anything groundbreaking, but if you like Tool, you'll probably like it.
It is a good Tool album, but like you said, no new ground broken. Good that they still sound like a cohesive unit after 13 years, but this album is a bit understated given the buildup and time between albums, IMO. There wasn't a lot of difference twixt Lateralus and 10K Days but at least the latter gave us The Pot. Everyone mellows I guess.
Are there some kind of supply issues with the regular CD? Amazon doesn’t seem to have it.
Is the song title 7empest pronounced “Seven Empest?”

So that was the much-touted 2nd run, huh? One day. Anyway... I bought the high res download and it sounds great even on my $69 computer speakers. So be it. I'm fine with not owning the physical product in this case.
My initial impressions of FI being a great Tool album remain in place. I'd even go as far as to say this is a really good prog album, which is a first for them IMHO. It scratches my itch for epics in a way that previous Tool records have not.
I don’t know if I’d call the second run “much-touted”. More like, “mentioned in a few places.”
