Oh no...this is so sad. Wonderful actor with a bigger than life presence on the screen.
Maybe some are unfamiliar with the narration he did on Arjen Lucassen's (Ayreon) 2012 solo album Lost in the New Real.
He had quite a large part and adds so much with that magical mesmerizing voice of his.

Exactly what I first thought.
Great actor who gave us some great moments, but it seems like he also did a lot of junk over the years too; though he always brought a bit of gravitas these lesser flicks. Definitely will be missed.

Mega-bummer. Rutger was still at it, with no sign of slowing down. He leaves behind an enormous legacy. Of note: "2019" is also the year of Roy Batty's demise.
I can hear him quoting "hey, a guy's gotta eat, right" and then laughing it off with that grin he had.
Regarding those less than stellar roles, you could almost see that twinkle in his eye, like I can't believe they're paying me to do this.
I don't think he took stardom seriously but could do serious as good as anyone on the planet.

The flip side of that is fans of Hauer (like me) who were drawn to his name in these pictures I think often went away very disappointed, and eventually Hauer became far less of a draw as a result. I think it kind of cheapened his career and reputation. I guess it's his choice, and if he was happy with the equation, then I guess I'm not arguing. But it does mitigate somewhat my overall impression of his career, and in some sense I don't think he ever really fulfilled his potential for greatness, despite delivering some outstanding performances.

I sometimes get him mixed up with Klaus Kinski. Not sure why.
He most certainly did, but it never marred his general reputation as a first-class character actor. His greatest role overall (IMHO) was a lead part in the fabulously idiosyncratic Dutch war movie 'Soldaat van Oranje' by Paul Verhoeven from 1977, followed obviously by 'Blade Runner'. Hauer had a natural charisma prompting either delightful presence (as in 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind'), a highly sympathetic ('Escape from Sobibor') or an intensely eerie one ('The Hitcher'). But he rarely disappointed.

Blade Runner was great, of course, but I have a sentimental fondness for Ladyhawke as well. And Michelle Pfeiffer at age 27. Good lord!

There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
Man, I loved that movie. Some feel that the soundtrack was cheesy or that some of the humor didn't work, but I thought that for a fantasy film the plot worked well. And yes, the Goddess that is Pfeiffer was just breath-taking in the title role. And Rutger, well he was just one badass knight with a well-earned grudge.
RIP to a legend and an icon in genre films.

I bet most of you have never seen this but my favorite Rutger Hauer role was in the Dutch series for kids 'Floris', directed by Paul Verhoeven. For both this was the breakthrough in the Netherlands
It was originaly from 1969, a little bit before my time, but it had lots of reruns in later years. As a kid I absolutely loved it. It was immensly popular in the Netherlands, not only with children.
Thats how I remember Rutger Hauer; as knight Floris. A childhood hero.694.jpg
