Avant-prog binge 2019

Chalkpie's Canterbury binge thread has been very succesful and interesting so I though maybe we could try same concept with avant-prog (or RIO if you insist).

My latest four record purchases have been 01 and 02 by Scherzoo, Iridule by Yugen and Logos by The Artaud Beats.

Yugen I have been familiar for years and Iridule is great album even though I think that I prefer more recent Death By Water. Anyway crazy stuff!

Scherzoo is completely new band for me. So far I am liking 01 more than 04. I really love angry squaking saxophones on 01 and miss those on 04. Scherzoo's organic sound is very pleasing (Yugen is maybe little bit too clinical) for me and it is not too retro.

The Artaud Beats I got just an hour ago. I haven't heard it yet and I don't know anything else about it either. Except that it has stellar line-up of John Greaves, Chris Cutler and Geoff Leigh! With Yumi Hara who I don't know. Any interesting info about this band that I should know?

I am currently on a bit of a Robert Wyatt binge.

Latest rio(ish) discovery; Bang on a Can all stars with the album 'Big, beautiful, dark and scary'. Superb!

Just coming off a huge Captain Beefheart binge.

Before that, an Autumn full of dark RIO - UZ, Magma, Present, SGM,

Now cleansing the palette with proto prog.

Jazz around the clock in my house on my Sonos speaker system.

I spent a few hours over the holidays correcting genre tags in my library.
My genre hygiene was poor, especially when going through stacks of cd's after binge purchases.
That's what I get for trusting what ever comes up in the ripping software ( subtle mis-spellings, blank, 'unknown', unclassified, etc )
It is amazing how many 'new' songs are coming up in my random mix now. I get to pick the genres from a list of all detected in the library.
There were some value judgements made, in some cases 'unclassified' probably Was the best guess.
Now avant-prog has a more prominent place in the rotation.
As does psych, RIO.
Gives me a breather from the Art Zoyd.

Art Zoyd is the only 'classic RIO-band' that i failed to get into. Somehow it does not make my blood rush any faster. I know I should try harder but there is just so much stuff out there that I do like that I lack the motivation.

Listened to Le Marriage this morning, and it's excellent obviously, it's more than excellent, but it's just not my type of thing. The only Zoyds I am really warmed up to are Symphonie pour le jour ou bruleront les cites (amen!) and Generation sans futur.

I am not too sure that the post Generation Zoyd can be called Avant-Prog anyway...I think the rock element becomes less and less of a factor as their work progresses in the 80's.

Listened to Le Marriage this morning, and it's excellent obviously, it's more than excellent, but it's just not my type of thing. The only Zoyds I am really warmed up to are Symphonie pour le jour ou bruleront les cites (amen!) and Generation sans futur.

Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer is my favourite Art Zoyd album. Generation sans futur is also excellent. I am not too fond with later (nineties and forward) more electronic works.

Thats your mistake, its not supposed to rush faster on AZ, it is supposed to give you the chills and freeze on its tracks!

Any thoughts on Fred Frith's band Cosa Brava? I just adore their first album Ragged Atlas (2010) and is currently getting familiar with second one The Letter (2012). They have great combination of balkan sounding folk, catchy melodies and some very complicated rock-ish sections.
