    New Rare Bird video

Don't know if this is necessarily new, but this video of the great early seventies British band playing on the Old Grey Whistle Test was posted on YouTube just a few days ago and I had never seen it before, with the special bonus of seeing Steve Gould and Mark Ashton singing in unison.

This is the video that is well known from that same era, besides the many videos of them lip synching their big hit, Sympathy.

God, that was fantastic. Thank you for sharing it. Steve Gould was such a magnificent singer, I'll never get why he wasn't a bigger star.

Trivia: David Kaffinetti lives in my neck of the woods ("The Peninsula" below San Fran) and plays locally with a band called SEZU.

Kaffinety, of course, later was one of the several doomed drummers in Spinal Tap.
What's astounding about the first clip, when one hears so much about cameras not having a clue of who's playing what in that era, is the incredible precision of the camera shots... specially when the two keyboards are exchanging licks.

Gould, who later was in Alvin Lee's band, is one of the great British singer-bassists of that era, with a very soulful and personal style of singing... alongside Jim Dewar and Richard Sinclair, among others.

Nice trivia is also that Gould sang backing-vocals for Mike Rutherford's Acting Very Strange.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember he actually plays the band's manager.

Er, you're both wrong; he plays the keyboardist (naturally enough), Viv Savage.

That's right. Ric Parnell, from Atomic Rooster, plays one of the drummers.

And lead vocals on some of Dave Greenslade’s Cactus Choir.

Their big hit, Sympathy, which, from what I've read, sold a million copies globally.

I actually think he’s in the upper echelon of prog vocalists. He’s a phenomenal singer.

The next three, although very different -lots of guitar and harmony vocals, but still with Gould and Kaddineti-, are also very good, specially the first one, Epic Forest, which, besides the LP, included an additional EP of three songs, one of them of more than 10 minutes length.
There's a short video of this era, with Gould now playing guitar...

Finally, when he left Rare Bird after the second album, drummer Mark Ashton became a full time singer with Headstone, a band who released two fine albums in the mid Seventies. He later recorded several solo albums and then apparently then left music to concentrate on his painting, which brought him a measure of success and relocated to Nice (France). In the past few years, though, he's been dabbling again in music, with a band of French musicians...

I've only really recently discovered how fantastic it is. A song he is singing on has only just come out on an album called The Chris White Experience - Volume One. Steve sings a beautiful song called 'She Makes Me Feel' written by Chris White (The Zombies) and Matthew Fisher (Procul Harum).

Such a drastic change when they recorded Epic Forest. A total different direction . The first 3 albums have powerful consistency . I miss those days

Rare Bird's keyboardist, and main author, Graham Field, died a year ago, in March 2018, I found out recently.
