Tin Huey founder and sideman to the stars--at least those stars with a more eccentric bent--most notably his extensive work with with Tom Waits. He was 61.

Jeez...only 61. He definitely was session man to the stars of a more eccentric nature.
RIP - a true Waits legend

Any time any one speaks to me about any musical project, the one absolute given is "it will not make big money". [tip of the hat to HK]

only a year older than me... primal scream... R.I.P.
What a shame.
Apparently he tripped and fell down his front steps, and never recovered. He's lived in Portland for the last year or two - his daughter lives here - and I'd seen him a few times and knew him slightly. Quite a character, and an amazing musician. The things that stick in my head were: Talking my way into a Tin Huey college show in '78 or so, where he ran through the audience frantically soloing on alto; seeing him with Oranj Symphonette some fifteen years ago where he did the same bit but didn't run as fast; and catching him in a three-saxophone avant-improv gig last year - where, counter to the way such sessions tend to go, he took the musically retrograde step of bringing his bass saxophone and mostly functioning as a bass player, rather than bringing his alto and having three alto players soloing simultaneously for an hour.
Such a loss for all of us, rest in peace, Ralph. Such gifted and versatile player - he is on some of my favourite records...
