Thread: Record Store Day 2017

    Record Store Day 2017

Has anybody seen anything that is going to get them up early on April 22?

Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes and ELP each have something this year.

I'm probably most interested in the heretofore unreleased Bill Evans live performance and the Nigerian funk singles box set.

There's also a Meredith Monk release that may be interesting.

I usually go to Freak Beat here in LA for the heavy discount on regular stock on Record Day. I don't usually care about special releases.

Isn't it against the rules for stores to reserve copies of RSD items?

And is the ELP really going to be a flexi and not a hard vinyl version?

I've got my eye on that Popol Vuh LP, but I seriously doubt it will show up at my local shop. I'll be after the Zappa, too, but that's not an RSD exclusive and will be easy to get even if I miss it on the day.

Sorry I got my orders and dates mixed up. This is what I preordered.

    I'm not buying the flexi.

I generally like PV, but I've never heard that one. It's good?

Yeah, not one of their best, but still pretty much their last good one, before the techno elements began to creep in.

Given up on RSD. It's evolved into a bloated, expensive ripoff.

-Coheed And Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Volume One [2LP] (150 Gram Splatter Vinyl, gatefold, download, first time on vinyl, limited to 2500, indie-retail exclusive)

The Coheed record I may not seek out as a priority per it's 1 of 3 versions, the other 2 being available through the band and at the shows. But I guess each version will be different. I love Good Apollo 1, but am not sure if I want all 3 versions.

For those unwilling/unable to get to RSD this year, Sony Legacy is offering a chance to win a run of this years releases from their April 2017 RSD offerings plus a turntable:

Re: the RSD website in the original post. What are the "Flippers?" in "Support Indie Record Stores, Not Flippers."

Gotta assume Flippers are greedy folk who buy up high-demand RSD items & then sell em on ebay to the highest bidders.

Yep. eBay is swarming with RSD releases before the stores are even open here in the west.

I still don't get this. Does each record store have only ONE release? If so, how would you know what they're going to have? And is it only vinyl?

I've been disappointed with Record Store Day the last couple of years. Two years ago one chain in the Boston area advertised a Spanish-language version of a Sir Douglas Quintet single for $9.99. A lot of money for a two-song 45, but being a Sir Doug nut, I had to have it. I get there and it's $11.99! Reluctantly, I shelled out for it as it was the only one they had. I did find an International Submarine Band single I didn't have for half the price it was selling for when it first came out for RSD two years earlier. So not a complete rip-off.

Looking forward to my day in court.

Stores get RSD stock based on numerous factors. In general, the larger stores in the larger areas will get the most stuff. I've never heard of a store getting only one copy of something, unless it was made in a really limited run. In general, if a store "qualifies" to carry a certain item, they'll get more than one.

As far as knowing what a store will have beforehand, most stores will tell you if you ask, though even they don't know exactly what they're getting until the shipment arrives. Some stores take the trouble to list what they're going to have on their web pages (some even post the prices) though most don't.

Stores may request certain items in desired quantities, but they get whatever the RSD truck brings, so to speak. Oh, and one of the rules is that they cannot return what they don't sell, so that encourages a judiciousness in terms of what to order.

RSD is for vinyl only, except in the rare circumstance where another format is specified (the last few years have seen a couple of cassette-only items, for example).

Don't disagree with you on this one...but sometimes, just sometimes, something awesome pops up and this year it's the first new The The for years. Hopefully, it's the first release of what may be a new album!!!

I am not going for the official releases , but you have lots of places with second hand vinyls and Rough Trade makes generally a free mini festival and its like a party day in Paris , especially when the weather is good.

Thanks for the replies. Seems likely. I never even think about ebay, so I did not guess.

I'm consistently amazed at just how often you really don't know what you're talking about!

THAT would require a few days work.

He's right that stores can request the items and quantities that they want, but they don't know how much of a fill they will get until it arrives. He's right that it's fundamentally a vinyl-oriented campaign, with some exceptions. What exactly is the problem?

    Yeah, I don't get it.

Is he possibly referring to my vinyl-only statement? My comment was about RSD exclusives, not RSD-first items, which may have more CDs. I don't really see the reason for lining up to buy something on RSD that is going to be available in larger quantities a few weeks later, so I don't personally consider those when discussing RSD items.

Otherwise, I don't know what the problem is.

But, usually, someone making blanket statement insults and then not providing anything to back it up when clarification is politely requested, is just a blowhard ignoramus who is full of shit.
