I bought Ben Monder- Flux a couple of years ago,the impetus might have come from PE, possibly from Organnissimo(jazz site)i really don't recall.Discussion and/or posting a clip from Oceana on PE recently probably influenced my decision to buy it,although i was keen to get more Ben Monder anyway, i just needed a push.

A groundbreaking and grossly underrated classic, sez me! I think it's one of the most progressive albums of the '70s... really! It rarely gets mentioned here, probably because it has more to do with jazz and funk than prog rock. But nobody was writing and performing this kind of polytonal funk previously. Of course, the two vocal tunes are clunkers, with "Sneaking Up Behind You" sounding like the BB trying to be The Average White Band (which isn't entirely a bad thing). But we won't hold it against them since the majority of the album was awesome!Originally Posted by Reid

Hmmm... never thought about it like that. I suppose "disco" in the way that something like Earth Wind & Fire could be considered disco. It was of it's time after all. But if this is disco, I think I might have Saturday night fever.

Listening to it on the CD. I've heard this tune before. I wish this CD sounded a little better. The dynamics are pretty squashed. I don't know if you're familiar with the Soul Bop Band, but their 2 disc live set is a great recording. It features Randy, Steve Smith, Hiram Bullock, Dave Kikoski, Victor Bailey, and Bill Evans. They do some Brecker Bros tunes and other stuff.
I'm not, but I'd probably dig it, Reid!

Nice to see that one. I played it many times when it was released. Although Magazine was called a New Wave-band, they had a lot of art-rock and progressive rock in their music. Great keyboard-stuff, sometimes even in the Jobson-vein, combined with Roxy Music-like sax and some of the most weird, but effective guitar-solo's you've heard. Their first one was fine too.
