^ How much time per day, and how many days per week, Duncan?
Speaking from a purely personal perspective:
It changes depending on the season:
Summer (and good weather):
I cycle (very hard) 2 to 3 times a week, for at least 2 hours a time.
And when traveling for business (every other week ) I spend time in the hotel's gym doing cardio on the eiptical - minimum 45 minutes (usually an hour) - and with a high resistance of "15" on those machines and with a 30 to 60 second very hard "interval" every 10 minutes at a resistance of "20".
Winter:
I go to the local gym at least 3x/week. When I was doing a lifting program, about 10 years ago, I was very 'scientific' about the workouts. Now, I just do a full-body strength workout each visit - focusing on core strength, with squats and deadlifts as the key exercises, and the rest being general strength stuff. (Back exercises, shoulder, etc.)
I also go to an indoor cycling clinic. Think of it as "spin class on steroids". I.e. it's on your own bike, and it isn't only spin - there's also a lot of high-resistance low-cadence strength building involved.
And again - when traveling for business I spend time in the hotel's gym at nights, doing cardio on the eiptical machine.
I ought to look like Charles Atlas

I ran, at a good pace, for 5 minutes last night on my treadmill.
A bit shy of your routine Duncan but I've run twice this week at this level, the first time I've exercised in 2 years. I ran marathons in the 90s so I love to run. Just couldn't muster the motivation with being dead tired after work. I'm optimistic I can keep up at this level for the next month and then move to 10 minutes (and up later) 3 to 4 times a week.
I am paying the price. I lost 50 pounds 3 years ago but have gained back 15. It doesn't help that I smoke dope only each Friday - and eat everything in site!!!
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)
After a long bout and recovery from the flu (not to mention holiday interference) plus back trouble - I am back on the treadmill. I check my heart rate on it and found a pace that keeps it in that 115 bpm range. If I keep it up for 25 minutes, that's one mile. That's nowhere equal to what I was doing this summer outside but hey, that's what the lag cost me.
For strength, I am doing glute bridges and hamstring stretches to rid a problem in the back of my legs, either my flailing attempts at pushups or pullups, and some back exercises. I'm going to add dumbbells at some point, probably February. I might add planks as well. It's slow progress but at least it is progress.

I stopped doing gyms. I do my workouts at home. I alternate doing pushups and planks (the fast twitch muscles get a good workout), and the next day I do deep knee bends. Body weight workouts are good at my age. I've been thinking about making a home gym out of one of the empty bedrooms. Maybe buy some light weights and do light squats and presses, or maybe find a used Airdyne bike.
I can damn-near tell you what the outside temperature currently is by my aches / pains.... Below 32 degrees Both ankles Ache 24/7! Sprained both over the years and it's come back to bite me. CBD balm helps but takes a few days to take effect. Above 70 degrees and I'm fine! Arizona is looking better every year.

You're workin' it, Greg! None of us will ever get back to the way we were in our 20s, but as long as you're dieting and exercising , you're ahead of 80% of Americans. (And 75% of Canadians )

This is what conservative minded public health guy Jay Olsansky said a few weeks ago:
"We are on the verge of a public health breakthrough of the kind we have never seen before,” says S. Jay Olshansky, a professor of public health who studies demographics and aging at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "It is not trivial. This is big time."
It's not just me.
Whether this is true or snake oil is irrelevant. the FACT is t hat rcarlberg is right - and "Staying active is the only cure for getting old. That includes not only the body but the mind."
Regardless of your health - an inactive mind and an inactive body will rot, and you WILL age quickly.

Duncan
Based on what? The public obesity epidemic? The mental health crisis among our youth (who, for the first time in history, have no optimism about the future)? The massive effects of global climate change on health? Your guy Olshansky sounds seriously delusional, equating longer lifespans with a "public health breakthrough" -- even though his untested "miracle drug" supplement has raised some concerns among real doctors with real credentials.
Unfortunately these days, "conservative minded" is all-too-often a euphemism for a believer in "alternative facts" -- which, like "alternative medicine," ceases to be alternative when proven real.

For the first time in history the youth have no optimism? The U.S. suicide rate among 15 to 24 year olds is just a little higher than it was in the late 80s and early 90s.
It doesn't look like you've actually bothered to find out what Olshansky has said. What alternative facts does he believe? Guarante was correct to point out that in one small mouse study that has not been replicated, there was a small cancer increase effect for a rare type of cancer. The Scientific American article was wrong about the ALS study by stating NR/pterostilibine at 4 times the amount most take slowed the advancement of the disease when the trial showed that on average NR/pterostilbine reversed ALS a bit at four months and after one year when the trial ended. Because of positive results of an accute kidney disease trial with the same dose of NR/pterostilbine, the FDA has granted Elysium permission to apply for drug status, which is extremely rare for a supplement. The massive effects of global climate change on health? In a few weeks, the results of two very small University of Washington studies of heart failure patients taking NR will be published and a third larger study of heart failure patients will be published in late summer or fall. Next year, there will be publications on NR and cognitive function and effects of NMN. So far, an NMN study has shown that it is safe and well tolerated as is NR.
By the way, the Earth is getting less polluted over time, not more. The U.S. is the cleanest large country and in the top ten overall but Europe has also been getting cleaner at a similar rate. China has about 40% less air pollution than it did in 1998 and India's pollution is also declining but so far at a much slower rate.

I didn't realize there was a cure to aging.
David "NMN" Sinclair has emphasized two things with respect to health. First, "The worst thing you can do is be sedentary." Second, "After 25 years of studying aging, the best advice I can give is to eat less." Of course, he also thinks sleep is important. Charles "NR" Brenner has made similar statements and ran in the Boston Marathon last year at 58. Leonard "NR/pterostilbine" Guarante said a decade ago: "You want to get your weight down to its ideal level as quickly as you can."
