My top 20 of *any* given year probably wouldn't be much more than half prog. It's a small subset of all that fits under the rock umbrella.

"On the Horizon" does NOT mean they had NOT released anything! It means they were still ramping up!

Please feel free to list ANY albums by U.S. and British Punk & New Wave bands that released their BEST material in 1978...

I generally agree with you, because by 78 the first wave of UK punk bands had already released their best albums, and New Wave was only just getting started.

But there are a few exceptions and they are listed in my OP.

These are the best albums IMO, by these artists:

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside (in fact, the best album ever by anyone)
The Stranglers - Black & White
    Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
    Magazine - Real Life
    Nina Hagen Band - s/t
    E.C. & the Attractions - This Year's Model
    Tubeway Army - s/t
    Blondie - Parallel Lines
Devo - Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! (best ever US new wave album imo)

Re popular music in general, 1978 was like a megaplex cinema; so that at the first screen you're watching Rock which is still strong and healthy in 1978 - sadly, Keith Moon died suddenly in September - then you cross into another room and there plays a completely different genre(s) with completely different iconography - Punk and New Wave; on third screen you're watching some Prog, on fourth there's some ECM, and so on.

One of the greatest live Prog albums ever recorded - Bursting Out - was released in September 1978

I disagree with that. If there really was such thing like "a year of transition" - for popular music in general - it could be only 1979 - 1980 imo.

Those bits I agree with. It most definitely was a year of transition. And has always been my cut off point for the old and the new

Original Punk bands, both UK and US had already released their best stuff, and knew it.

Mainstream pop and rock had changed dramatically and many mainstream bands were moving towards a more New Wave sound, same was true for many pub rock bands. And if you use 78 as a divider for any collection of rock/pop records, you can clearly see the musical divide between the old AOR bands and soft singer/songwriters and the harder edged New Wave bands and singers.

60s blues/hard rock bands had also long since released their best albums.

NWOBHM as a term was coined in 1979, but the style and bands themselves had already raised their heads above the parapet to great success.

And New Wave/post-punk bands had the wind in their sails and were cruising towards greatness.

Goth, synth, industrial were also releasing their early albums and getting better all the time.

Agreed. IMO, 1979 was more like the first year of the early '80s than the last year of the '70s.

I'd say that the 80's started in 77 with the winter of hate ... and the 70's started in 67 with The Summer Of Love

Before 66/67, it was mainly still the 60's... or even the 50's if you wish

i just remember it being the height of disco, so almost anything that wasnt disco or wasn't off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was 'good'......funny how my tastes have changed over the years and, nowadays, i can get a lot of enjoyment out of a lot of classic disco.......the transition year was about 1980: disco was taking a huge nose-dive, new wave and new romantic music was starting to bloom - both classier (and arguably more talented) offshoots of punk, electro-pop was in its infancy, and the "faceless" rock band years began (between '80 - '82, when bands like Toto and REO Speedwagon could have big radio hits but the general music listening non-audiophile public had no idea who was in the band or what they looked like)

Someone ought to mention Ultravox’s “System of Romance”, a post punk classic IMO.

Great album, but back in the day in the UK, the term post-punk wasn't used. New Romantics and New Wave were the terms de jour for synth bands.
