Because the British invented international soccer. England and Scotland played the first game between two national soccer teams in Glasgow in 1872 in front of 4,000 spectators. Twelve years later, the national soccer associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland launched the British Home Championship tournament, which was contested almost every year for the next century. Meanwhile, FIFA, the governing body responsible for the World Cup, didn't come along until 1904. By that point, the United Kingdom's four independent national soccer associations were deemed too powerful to be combined.

The answer is in the full name of the State - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Although technically only 3 of the 4 parts are actual countries that made up the two unions, first Scotland with England in 1707, then Ireland with England in 1801 (both forced unions by the Crown I hasten to add). Northern Ireland is the remnant of the 1801 Union.
Wales however ceased to be a legal and independent country and became a legal part of England in 1282, "England & Wales" is the legal entity as far as the law of the land goes. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own legal systems. Cornwall and Northumberland have as much right to a team as Wales does.
In cricket, rugby, Gaelic football and hurling, the Ireland teams, contain players from both the Republic of Ireland and from Northern Ireland.

Sweden played a terrible match. Ireland played really well. And it was clear Sweden weren't prepared for a series of attacks after Ireland scored Sweden's goal for them.
Also why are there no teams from Mann, Jersey or Guernsey? None of them are part of the UK though, they are all Crown Dependencies, so belonging to the British Crown and British, but not part of the UK, those 3 states don't belong to the EU either.
But on the idea of cultural/historical British teams from the Celts onwards, wouldn't it be great to see a dozen or so British countries and regions in the Euros.

First half the Swedes seemed still to be looking for the orange practice cones. A notch better in the second half, but still lucky that the Irish were so trigger happy, firing all over the place, including their own goal

Italy vs Belgium was a pretty good match - that is: for the Italian part.
Belgium were a huge disappointment. Tactically they were completely outclassed by the Italians. Too bad: I had high expectation for this Belgium side. They probably have THE best group of individual players in the tournament. They really have to get their defense and tactics sorted out though.
Italy was the best side I have seen so far this tournament.
