Funny that the box includes the single mix of "Tears Began to Fall" without telling the story of the single: that it was released under the pseudonym Junier Mintz (with a writing credit to Billy Dexter) in a repeat of the tactic Zappa had tried a few years earlier by issuing a single from Cruising with Ruben & the Jets actually credited to Ruben & the Jets.

Fast release pace these days. Next one is scheduled for summer and will be a six CD set of shows (mostly) in Pennsylvania from spring and fall 1974 and fall 1976, mixed from 4-track road tapes.

The 8-CD Mothers 1971 listed at $109.98; this new one is 6 CDs and they're charging $159.98--over $26 per disc. Do they assign price points by throwing darts or what?

I just don't know how people keep up with all the Zappa product coming out now, as appealing as a lot of it looks.

Definitely going to pick this one up.

I wonder if disc two is the old Beat the Boots album Unmitigated Audacity.

It's from Edinboro, PA, while Unmedigated (to give it its original bootleg spelling--they corrected it for BTB) is from South Bend, IN, according to Wiki Jawaka. There are a couple of tracks from South Bend on the box, but they are not from that part of the show.

There is an edition without the poster available for pre-order later in April, hopefully a bit cheaper.

One article mentions that Zappa edited/mixed those two tracks himself.

The only real content problem I have with the Flo and Eddie era humor is how many dated cultural references there are. It was probably hilarious at the time but hasn't aged well. There were also more serious cultural discussions hidden there in the groupie routine etc., as always with Zappa.

My issue is with how much of the show was more of a comedy routine than a concert. The Roxy lineup that followed (well, with the Zappa injury period in between) was much better at confining the comedy bits to discrete segments, such as the "room service" bit between Napoleon Murphy Brock and FZ. Too much of the Flo & Eddie shows were them goofing around with long-lasting comedy bits.
Same here. The ratio was the most skewed away from music during this period. While I do like this period, its definitely near the bottom for me.

That said, this filmore release is pretty damn excellent.

Interesting mix of dates on this one. But, mostly for that 74 stuff, I'm in.

Maybe I missed it but any thoughts on the new box "Erie"? Love the song selection and lineups.

I don't own any of these sets but looking at the tracklist, one thing which struck me here was that one of the set-lists had a long run of Freak Out! songs played. Which seemed unusual...wonder if there was a reason for this.

I have a good soundboard 2CD boot from the Edinboro show 8th of may 74 which is identic to CD1 and 2 here, the second show looks like the European fall tour, there is a very good soundboard from Swiss, Swiss cheese which has a similar setlist. Does someone know the date of the second show?

The April/May 1974 tour was the "10 Years of the Mothers" tour so he had the band do a long set of Freak Out songs with modernized 70's arrangements. The above mentioned Unmitigated Audacity from the first Beat the Boots box had those songs, and since then some better recordings have turned up including the previous copy of the Edinboro show.

Yeah, to my mind Zappa '74 and Zappa '76 are VERY different animals. The only rationale for combining these is geographic.

I have two months to figure out how to explain to my wife that there's another Zappa boxed set that I need to buy.

That one seems to get some flak around here, but I love it.

There are certainly shows out there.

Bongo Fury at El Paso 23 may 75 is a good soundboard recording with some extras on a 2CD set, JC Black is a guest on two tracks

Same. I do wish they were separate, but I will clearly buy both anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. Just odd, given all these sets have all focused on one specific thing/entity/idea.
