KANSAS To Launch Tour Celebrating 40th Anniversary Of Leftoverture; Album To Be Performed In It's Entirety
America's preeminent progressive rock band Kansas will be touring select cities this fall celebrating the 40th Anniversary of their breakthrough album Leftoverture. To celebrate, for the first time in history, the band will be performing the album in its entirety. The tour will showcase two hours of classic Kansas music including hit songs, deep cuts, and new songs from their soon to be released album, The Prelude Implicit.
In 1976, Kansas released the album Leftoverture. Containing the smash hit, and million-selling single "Carry On Wayward Son”, along with fan favorites such as "The Wall," "Miracles Out Of Nowhere," and "What's On My Mind”, Leftoverture became the band's breakthrough album. The album peaked at #5 on Billboard's Album charts and reached sextuple-platinum status for more than 6 million copies sold.
"These definitely will not be your typical Kansas concerts of the past few years," commented original Kansas guitarist Richard Williams. "This is incredibly exciting for the entire band, and hopefully our fans. It's something we've never done before, play an album in its entirety, as part of a set. 'Leftoverture' was our breakthrough, and it's special that we are getting to celebrate it 40 years later. We've never even played "Questions of My Childhood" live before. I can't wait!"
The tour will also debut performances of songs from the band's latest studio release The Prelude Implicit. The new album, scheduled for release in September 2016 is the band's 15th studio album and first new album since 2000.
Kansas lead vocalist Ronnie Platt added, "This is going to be really special for both the band and our fans. It has been really wild recording 'The Prelude Implicit.' We are anxious to perform some of the songs for live audiences. To be able to do that while also be performing 'Leftoverture' in its entirety, and more; this is going to be a blast! Who knows, we may even have some more twists added in!"

Interesting that they are highlighting "Play the Game Tonight". I know Kansas performed "Fight Fire with Fire" frequently post-Elefante. Was "Play the Game Tonight" ever performed by Walsh & co.? I'm actually a fan of this song so I am glad they are performing it.

If they play Leftoverture in the original running order that means Carry On Wayward Son will not be part of the encore, probably the first time that's happened for a very long time. And they'll have to find something else to put in its usual place - don't think they could just do Fight Fire With Fire for the encore and be done with it.
Don't really care about Questions of my Childhood, I'm dying to see all of Magnum Opus. Of the 6 or 7 times I've seen them, the most they played of it was the howling at the moon part. Ok, I do want to see Questions as well, but Magnum Opus for sure. I'd love for them to throw in Closet Chronicles. I saw them last year but they omitted that song from the setlist the night I saw them, possibly because there were storms in the area and they may have felt rushed for time. They are scheduled to play at the beautiful Taft theater here in Cincy, should be a great show.
i was just watching the Device Voice Drum DVD the other day and thought that they should perform Leftoverture for it's 40th Anniversary. they read my mind. of course it's not gonna sound the same without Steve & Robbie. but a great thing to do. i hope this new album is really good because i would really hate it if i hated it.
Only saw Kansas once back in th every early '80's. This looks like a real treat....OCT 7th for ATL...nice.
Interesting note: add another band that is jumping on the "entire album" marketing plan....(i'm not complaining or slagging them or any one)...actually, I think the Prog band community have found a marketing method that seems to be resonating with the fan-base. (I know I've been enjoying YES, RUSH & others employing this tactic)

Kind of weird, i guess for the current part of the tour (now - Sep 2, which is a lot of dates) you get the 'standard' Kansas show then on Sep 30 starts the 40th anniversary extravaganza?

There's a legend that Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" syncs up with "The Wizard of Oz." Mostly it's from chemically-altered people who tend to see synchronous patterns everywhere.

I saw them on the PONR tour and as I recall Carry On was not the encore.. Honestly don't remember what was the show closer other than Kerry came out from behind the keyboards and strapped on a guitar and ripped an awesome guitar solo.. Great show..
Actually MO was the encore on both the 77 and 78 tours.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
I think I've seen Kansas 5 times since 2000. Last time was in 2008. I've always been disappointed that I never saw them play Magnum Opus live. I've heard small references to it during concerts, and Howling At The Moon, but that's about it. I'm starting get really curious about this new album. Hopefully we'll get at least one or two full tracks from the album posted online somewhere.

Band's gotta eat...
I've always found the one-two punch of the rocker Down the Road followed immediately (after what I always felt was an unusually short pause on an LP) by the symphonic goodness of Song for America one of the strongest points in their entire catalog. Doing them exactly like that as an encore would be awesome.
I saw Kansas live several times between 1975 and 1980, but not since. This is the first time I've felt my interest rekindled. I hope things go very well for them, both with the tour and the new album.
