Actually, those are almost the exact same song. Apparently, Rod The Mod wrote the song with a couple of the guys in his band, and afterwards, he realized the similarity to the Bob Zimmerman composition, so he and Bob apparently came to an agreement to share the royalties accordingly.

Back in the heyday of MTV I remember there being two Ball and Chain being played around the same time and someoone on there saying it was the most used title for songs, at least at that time. Don't remember anyone with this song, even the ones on MTV, nor am I sure I'm correct about any of this. Maybe someone here will have some insight.

I do remember seeing Elton John’s “Ball and Chain” on MTV back in the day. Who was the other? XTC? Did they do a video for that one? “Senses Working Overtime” was the only one I remember seeing with regularity until “Wonderland” was released.

Also, Bucks Fizz, and there's a Run For Your Life in the 1965 musical Skyscraper.
