Frank Zappa Documentary & Vault Preservation Kickstarter

Wow! $500k to get started on this doc. But unrestricted access to his entire vault. Telling the complete Frank story, preserving his vault's contents, and bringing us music from that vault. All with the complete permission of the Zappa family. This looks cool.

Interesting. Who knew that the Zappas can't afford to keep The Vault in a way. I hope it is saved for historical and music reasons

I don't understand why the Zappa Family isn't trying to preserve the vault contents themselves. The family is worth tens of millions of dollars and you'd think they would realize that continuing to put out vault contents would keep the income coming in. Zappa and then Gail had a vault master. Have the kids discontinued that? Doesn't make sense.

But the kickstarter sounds pretty cool. I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, this all seems very weird...like the Dweez crowd-funding his album. I can understand if all the Zappa kids have moved on and have their own places now and none of them are interested in living at that house. But not being able to find the funds to do the archiving work? I guess an appropriate storage space could be pricey, so digitizing makes sense from that perspective.

Yeah some of the parts of this campaign seem a little strange, especially the "own something from Zappa's house" part, but if this is what needs to be done to preserve the vaults, I'm not arguing.

I think when Gail passed away it was mentioned that Ahmet would be the one who was taking over the estate. I believe a tour of the vault and property with Ahmet is one of the Kickstarter pledge prizes.

This is so cool. Good thing I don't have $6000 - if I had a chance to see the Vault, I'd likely spontaneously combust in a joyous puff of green smoke.

Maybe I didn't read the info carefully enough, but why is the guy now saying in his latest update that he needs $3,000,000 to complete the documentary?

    This was always there:

If we raise $500K, we'll have enough to get started immediately.
If we raise $1MM, we'll have enough to shoot the entire movie.
If we raise $2MM, we'll have enough to finish the entire movie.

Even in the video, he was pretty explicit about needing $500k to "get started".

Ok, but what is the documentary download that was included as the primary perk in some pledge levels when the goal was $500K?

The chances of finishing the movie seem kind of slim, IMO.

    This from Ahmet @ Zappa.com:

    Hey Everybody,
People have been asking so I just wanted to clarify that the family is proud to give Alex Winter and his project our complete support, as well as unrestricted access to the Vault. This is the first time we've ever opened the Vault to someone outside of our family, but Alex is an exceptional filmmaker and storyteller, and we are excited to see him tell Frank's story.
While we appreciate that the Kickstarter will help us with the larger project of preserving the Vault, I want to make sure everyone knows that this is NOT our project but we absolutely SUPPORT the project and Alex, and that the Zappa Family Trust will not receive any of the funds Alex raises during the Kickstarter (though if someone makes the $9 million pledge, which would obviously be awesome, a portion of that pledge will be used to purchase the house from the family at its market value).
Alongside the rest of you, we're excited to see what Alex and his team will find.

The way things are going, it looks like they may end up with only 1MM from the Kickstarter,
    plus merchandising : http://www.zappamovie.com/addons/.

I'm thinking I'll up my pledge. He's probably hoping for a lot of that.
