    Floyd's Animals

Why is Pink Floyd's Animals so popular? I Don't Get It!
Sure it's got some good music on it,but I've never been that thrilled!
More interesting, and greater listening are Meddle,DSOTM, Atom Heart Mother and WYWH!
Four Floyd albums that hit the mark, whilst Animals just doesn't have that punch imho!
Does anyone else agree or am i in the minority?

Animals is my favorite, I find it the darkest of Floyd's albums which is something I usually connect with. Waters is at his most biting and Gilmour is on top form.

Animals is MY favourite too - followed by Meddle.

I actually wouldn't call it popular if we're looking at the bigger picture outside of hardcore prog fans. There, its virtually unknown.

    * My personal favorite too, btw

I'm with Nog. It is my favourite PF recording because it is dark, cynical, and bitter....which for some reason interests me. My only complaint is I feel like it is missing another song. Other than that, find it brilliant.

So many great moments on this album. I love it... top 3 Floyd for me.

To these ears, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds and Animals are the best albums by Pink Floyd

Popular with 'prog' fans but not so much casual, 'classic rock' fans who much prefer DSOTM and The Wall.

"Dogs" is maybe my favorite song by them. The lyrics are as bleak as a Eugene O'Neill play, the spacey passages are really transporting, and Gilmour delivers some all-time exquisite, majestic guitar turns. The rest of the album I'm not so into, though the "Pigs on the Wing"s are nice enough.

Dogs is not only my favorite Floyd song, it is in my top 20 Prog songs of all time. The harmonized guitar section (Repeated at the end) brings me to tears every time - it is so beautiful and majestic. Awesome music, awesome lyrics, perfect production. I even leave one of my acoustic guitars tuned down a whole step just so I can play Dogs on a whim.

Kelly, awww I love that album give it another chance.
Floyd animals is outstanding, one thing you won't forget now is Pigs 3 different ones, one of the pigs is referenced in that song is Mary Whitehouse she was a stuck up party pooper who hated music (in general I think), nightmare really, advocated against among others to Zappa and Alice Cooper lyrics etc etc etc, list never ends

Instrumentals are great, you can clearly hear Waters fretless bass guitar here

Here are part of the song lyrics that mention her:
"Hey you Whitehouse, ha ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse, ha ha, charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street
    You're nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
    And do you feel abused?.."

P.S. I love the funny noises too

two of my ultimate favourite PF albums right here:

yes doh that's it! It was Gilmour, you are right! I forgot about that, but now you mention it, Mister Triscuits, that's right! ha! Damn so true, I knew that
i.e. Just like with Helter Skelter instead of Paul McCartney on bass it was actually Lennon playing bass hahaha!!

Most of the times I tend reply/type immediately without giving it a second thought, never step back and think much about it but I really ought to stop doing that and reflect on this more.

I love how Gilmour sings the first half of "Dogs" before the long instrumental section, eventually transitioning to Waters on vocals.

When I was in college, ever so slightly altered, we used to wonder what was the best Floyd album. Animals was always a possibility, and always somewhat of a wild card. I think it was just so different than what came before, in a way, that it was a daring choice. And yet, it always made perfect sense too.

I love Animals too! Saw them on this US Tour, with the exploding pig...

My dream concert is the Animals tour. I just missed it - heard Animals for the first time in October 1978, along with Tull.

I think relative to Floyd's other 70s albums, Animals is probably less popular than several. Around here, it's probably popular for the reasons several posters have mentioned; the darkness, cynicism, and some of the really brilliant instrumental sections.

For me, it's a toss up between Animals and WYWH as my personal favorite. I really dislike Atom Heart Mother, finding it an unfocused mess, and am only so-so on Meddle. But Floyd covered a fair amount of territory in their career. I think it's OK to really dig some of it and not dig other albums. Animals does have a somewhat different vibe from the other Floyd albums. Ultimately just a matter of personal taste.

I do agree with Gryphs that Animals could perhaps have used one more track. That would be the only fault I'd find with it, it really gives me goosebumps every time I play it.

The climax and closing riff of the album that immediately follows "You better stay home, do as you're told... get out of the road if you wanna grow old..." is just orgasmic.
