The Remembering- Most Underrated YES Epic?

There's a lot of great music in there. Just seeing that alone would make me want to take in the summer tour.

Not for me. I like it but it seems to repeat itself too much. I don't know if I would say anything from tales is outright boring but for me the remembering probably comes the closest. Sorry if that offends you.

I know I'm by myself in this opinion but I really like the ancient. To me that's YES's most under rated epic. Everyone seems to hate it except me. I like the otherworldly, exotic and mystical quality of it. I think out of all the tracks on tales the ancient fits the album cover the best. Again, apparently that's just me though.

I don't mind. You backed up your thoughts and shared them. I couldn't really ask for more. Nobody has to agree with the title of the thread. Just curious everyone's thoughts.

I just thought he was being snarky by saying he couldn't remember what the remembering was.

My Yes knowledge is a bit patchy. Obviously.

I've always liked them but for some reason not as studiously as with a lot of other bands.

One of my new year's resolutions is to listen to Tales... a few times. I have, of course, but not enough.

I look forward to the day where I can play this album on vinyl on a good stereo system with the lights down low with a glass of wine and some incense burning. Female company desired but not absolutely necessary.

Love it. Beautiful track with wonderful and dreamy sections... I love "The Ancient" too.

The second half of The Remembering is some of the best stuff they ever did, and what a finish! I like the first half, too, but it does seem less developed than the rest- a bit more from Wakeman might have finished it off a little better. Squire claimed that some of his best work is in the quiet part of this track, which has caused me to listen a little closer and find a lot to like.

I happen to love the Ancient- it's really two songs with a reprise of the first part at the very end. The first half is about as crazy as they ever got (which I love) and the second is about as beautiful as the beginning is wild.

"The Remembering" has always had a special place in my heart. I think it is the target of a lot of the criticism that Tales is "padded," but there's a lot of subtle beauty even in the so-called padding if you have the patience for it. In particular, that out-of-tempo "Mellotron soup" passage that comes up four times over the course of the side: every time it occurs, there's a little more happening. It's not just the same wash of sound four times; it's gradually evolving. I love that.

I'm with you. I like the song as well, but find it repetitive. Also when people talk about Tales being "padded," I always think about this track, which has a lot of sort of empty moments that to me could have been tightened up considerably. There are certainly some good moments, though, and those largely save it from being a throw-away.

You are not alone, The Ancient is my favorite track on Tales, though it took time for me to come to this point. The beginning is quite jarring, and takes some getting used to. Now, it's the moment I anticipate most eagerly when I spin Tales. Some of the most ambitious stuff Yes ever did in this track.

I always loved The Remembering---it is a gorgeous piece of music---and Howe's guitar work is subtle and beautiful---and the finale is amazing. Don't see any of it as filler. Honestly the only part of Tales that rambles a bit for me is Ritual--the first half when Jon sings "til we sail and I will be there--as clearer companions shall..." When I first heard the album The Remembering ---along with RSOG--were my favorites. But I think the whole thing is an amazing piece of prog music---and I was just listening to Side 2 this week at the gym. Was surprised to hear it's one of Steve Wilson's favorite Yes album.

All four sections have been my favourite at one time or another. I love every second of this album and wouldn't change a thing about it.

This is likely one of the only things that would lead me to see the band again.

I love the "..relayer..." section with the kick ass bass playing. One of Squire's greatest moments!

It’s the side of Tales that I struggle with most. No matter what state of mind I’m in, I just cannot connect with it at all. Too diffuse and meandering. For what it’s worth, I think that “The Ancient” is the most underrated piece here, and that RSOG is the most overrated. In any case, though it still strikes me as padded/overstuffed, Disc 2 is where this album comes alive for me. At least some of the music’s lively, and the conclusion of “Ritual” is just gorgeous.

The Remebering is my favorite track off of TFTO. I've written in the past of my attempt to cut out the "padding" and really wasn't able to cut anything out that would make a substantial difference. Maybe cut out one of the initial verse sections which does repeat and remove the "DON THE CAP' section ( I think the second time with the lute is better). But after many listens, I really wouldn't change a thing.

I do love the two Wakeman interlude sections with the synth melody (sort of like what he did in AYAI) with Steve playing the guitar in the same style that Rutherford did in DWTMK (scrapping the strings). The ending/climax of the song is very powerful. I do wish the Relayer sections didn't just sort of die and they kept up the up tempo rock sections a little longer. Great song along with To Be Over.

'The Remembering' is possibly my favorite Yes track. (Well along with 'To Be Over', 'Siberian Khatru', 'Awaken', and 'And You & I') Most underrated? I'd say, although it has only been since I came to PE that I realized it wasn't everyone's favorite, (It was, like, everyone's favorite of our group, back in the day)

I thought sides 1 and 4 were pretty much the bees knees from the start. Eventually found side 3 remarkable in it's on right. Aside from Sound Chaser, it's probably the farthest 'out' Yes ever got and as such holds a special place.

Which leaves side 2, The Remembering. I'm in the camp that it does go on too long, especially the ending. I can almost see Offord standing in the control room with a stopwatch going "OK, boys one more time around. We've almost got the side full." And I don't think it's coincidental that The Remembering was the first Tales number dropped from the set.

That said, there's still a lot to enjoy and I've really come around on it. I think the verses work well and the opening section is one of my favorite parts of Tales. The Relayer jam is pretty solid, if repetitive. Perhaps I should paraphrase McCartney on changing the White Album: It's great. It sold. It's bloody Yes' Tales From Topographic Oceans. Shut up.
