    On the 2nd January....

....when it's all over, if you're like me, you'll slip into depressive melancholic nostalgia. And what do you listen to then?
I then have to listen to stuff that increases the deep dark heavy feelings, so: Kate Bush, Cure, Bauhaus, Mission, Siouxsie, Stranglers, Damned, Sisters of Mercy, DAF, Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, OMD, Visage and such like. As well as doom bands like Cathedral, Doomsword, Candlemass, Black Lodge and so on.

Throw a little Joy Division in there, too.

Looking forward to my day in court.

Jan 2nd being a Saturday, I'll probably be at the beach, so I won't be listening to anything there except the lapping of the waves.

I always heave a large sigh of relief when December turns into January... Not a fan of the Holidays. This year though, I'm feeling a total indifference to it all. There is no "holiday cheer" to be found here since we haven't gotten one centimeter ( 0.3937007874 of an inch for our American friends who cannot master the Base 10 math of the metric system) of snow; something unheard of here for this time of the year!

Basically when I'm down, I want the music to take me even further down. And when I'm up I want the music to take me higher and keep me up.
Isn't it like that naturally for most people?
For me at least there's nothing worse, as regards sounds around me, than hearing happy pop when I'm feeling like shit!
My missus knows when the Black Dog is on me, simply by what I'm playing.

    Exactly.

Come on guys, 2 Jan is figurative not literal for 2016... i.e. the last of the xmas/new year bank holidays (1 Jan) has passed. Next up 6 Jan.

But I get your point, some of you feel it on the first working day after New Year, but I truly do feel it on 2 Jan whatever day of the week it is.

I was going to mention a 7 letter word beginning with S and ending in E, but perhaps not suitable for this forum. However, much higher round this time of year for many people. And my mental ailments have not spared me from the temptation.

But should we perhaps not go there?

Whatever the reason, the dark and sometimes disturbing music keeps me on an even keel, even in the darkest, hardest moments it soothes the savage breast and the tortured mind.
During some particularly difficult periods in the winter I have to have music via earbuds pumping away in my ears 24/7, even when sleeping. Otherwise the little chap on my left shoulder starts saying nasty things to me and making scary suggestions.

    Too much? Sorry!

Well, if you won't say it, I will.

    Solstice. (But it's eight letters.)

I've got one music book that the authors divided into 2 main parts - pop and rock. Now how they managed to make that main division still amazes me.

The top of the tree division in my musical classification system however, and relevant to the theme of this thread, is (and has been for many years) light music and dark music - which of course transcends all sorts of genre boundaries. Dark and light exist in all musical styles and genres.

Early January must be a depressing time in the northern hemisphere, when the festive season and the holidays are over and you have the rest of winter to endure before things warm up.

We don't have that phenomenon here; After Xmas/New Year is over there is still summer to enjoy

My most depressing month is probably May. We don't have lots of lovely autumn colours, at least not where I live, it's just a month when you can feel winter in the air and you know it has not even started yet and there will be three months of it. Strangely, I often don't find June and July so bad once I have got used to the colder weather.

What a great idea for a thread PeterG. And some really good suggestions. When I feel down in the poopy weeds, things on my menu would be; Joy Divsion, IQ (Dark Matter), Genesis (Watcher of The Skies)Live version and Kate Bush (Wuthering Heights).

You guys are bummed about going back to work and I'm bummed that I don't have any. The first quarter of the year is the slow season in my business (playing music) and January is the worst month of them all; I have one $100 jazz gig and that's it. I try to store my acorns for the winter, but it isn't easy.

As far as music... I don't know. My moods or the seasons don't really effect what I listen to; I'm mostly a "shuffle play" kind of guy these days.

If we're going that route, then I'll suggest Marillion's "Don't Hurt Yourself" and "Essence."

I've been slipping frequently from time to time into depression lately. When my mom died last month it left a big whole in me. As they say no one loves you like your mother. We've been cleaning out the house that I grew up in over the last couple of months and finding pictures that bring back the memories especially of Christmas time. My parents always made Christmas special for us kids all the time my mom instilling in us the true meaning of it all. You don't have to have faith to believe in the message of what Christmas is about, at least I don't think so. I have a grandbaby girl on the way in January and I am looking forward with bated breath to hold her in my arms for the first time and watch her look up into my eyes in wonderment. The future is what keeps us going. Drink a toast to the past and cherish everything you have now, for one day it may be gone forever.

Hopefully, PeterG, you have someone professional to talk to about this, other than just us. I'm sure there's help available, and you owe it to yourself to get it if needed.
