Thread: Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Glad to see some love for Questions. I also like Circles, Visionary Mountain, Martha's Madman, Davy's On the Road and the live version of Quinn the Eskimo.

I loved how they could produce something as progressive as Blinded By The Light and something sublimely pop as You Angel You from Angel Station. This group deserves more love.

before the Eart Band, Manfred's previous band was Chapter III... two albums released on Vertigo

my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Solar Fire is one of my favorite albums of all time, space/prog rock at its finest.

The only one I have is Get Yer Rocks Off (aka Messin'). Great record. Love the song Messin', in particular, and that John Prine song on there (Feeling Alright, I think is the title?) was kinda fun too.

Okay, I see, but the thread is about MMEB not about Manfred Mann as a person, so I thought the chapter stuff was MMEB albums that I had somehow missed.

MMC3 was a full-fledged band and not much to do with his 60's stuff (despite Hugg's presence in both eras)... and MMC3 were in a way "proggier" than most of MMEB

This week MMEB published this live-recording from the track Give Me The Good Earth, performed in 1973 for Old Grey Whistle Test.
    Love that Moog-solo!

Manfred Mann was a hero on the Moog.

my preferential order would be (and they are all really good)

    1-Nightingales and Bombers
    2-Good Earth
    3-Watch
4-Somewhere in Afrika (this has held up very well)
    5-Solar Fire

    best

The Roaring Silence is great as well, and, of course N&B, The Good Earth and Solar Fire. I have their 40th Anniversary Box Set - 20 CDs, lots of great stuff.

Thank you for the infos and recommendations.

My only real contact with the MMEB was a concert I attended in the early 80ies, during the "Afrika" tour.

I remember I was less than impressed: quite loud and heavy guitar(s) leaded rock with very few (or barely audible) keys, which is strange since Manfred Mann is mainly know as a keyboard player. I'd guess Moog solos were no longer fashionable in the 80ies. Very disappointing.

Not sure I would include "Somewhere..." in my future MMEB collection.

Didnt like it all when it came out but decades later, after a recent listen I really dug it. I find that happening a lot lately-weird

    IMHO

    Solar Fire
    Nightingale & Bombers
    Roaring Silence
    Watch

a toss between Messin' & Angel Station

But TBH, I think both Chapter Three albums are proggier

^ Those are good choices. People seem to either love or hate Somewhere In Afrika. I always liked it.

Manfred Mann also played Moog on this:

    Frog in boiling water

Mostly agree - I’d replace Good Earth with the Roaring Silence and add Angel Station.

Get their great 5-album run starting in 1973 with Solar Fire and ending in 1978 with Watch.

Here's another vote for Chapter Three, prog jazz at its best. Mike Hugg's voice is exceptional too

To bad they only did 2 albums. But there is also a BBC double, which also contains music they made for a movie.

Some tracks from the never released third Chapter III-album are collected on the 4-CD-box Odds & Sods - Mis-Takes & Out-Takes. Some of the ideas on those tracks were later re-used on songs from MMEB.

B.t.w. if you skip Solar Fire from your top 5 you'll miss one of MMEB highlights, Father Of Day, Father Of Night.

    Here's a live-version of that track:

Although I prefer the studio-version because it has that lovely Mellotron:
