I only have three Flairck albums, but to call them rock sounds more a case of misunderstanding the aim of the band than of seeing them as some watered-down rock group for the petite bourgeoisie. I think their crossover is at times quite interesting, but rock doesn't seem to play a very important part in their fusion.
Flairck didn't want to make rock, but they were seen as a group for the petite bourgeoisie. My piano-teacher, who liked groups like Pink Floyd, hated them.
Yes I think you are right about the Sky audience, some of their work has that 'middlebrow' quality to it. Some have said the same about ELP but IMHO they were always much more 'rock and roll'.

I wouldn't put ELP in that categroy, but I think Ekseption would fit. I still like them very much.
