Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
Genesis
Gentle Giant
Dixie Dregs
Tribal Tech
Bruford
If I'm ranking favorites (as opposed to who I think is best) then my criteria is going to be how much I enjoy playing their stuff. And that will depend, in no small part, on how much stuff is out there to play. If a band has only a few albums and I've already played them to death, then they're not getting picked for this, no matter how immortal I think they are.
My top 5, in no order, would be:
King Crimson
Soft Machine
Zappa
Electric Miles Davis
... and that's it.
I can't go to 5 without having to complain about how five is too few. I've got 3 or 4 bands tied for the last spot.
Yes
King Crimson
ELP
Marillion
Anglagard
…Could’ve gone many ways with 4 & 5. My all-time fav band isn’t proggy enough to be on this list…

We are the grandchildren of apes, not angels
But only we are gifted with the eyes to see
On days without FEAR, when our heads are clear
That angels, we could be
