Top Five Moody Blues albums (studio only)

I was thinking about this the other night. It's no easy task for me since I like all of their classic seven albums and even a few after that. I actually hate to leave any of the 67-72 albums out of a top five but some are better than others. Here is my top five. Please list studio albums only(no live or compilations).

    1. To our Children's Children's Children
    2. On the Threshold of a Dream
    3. A Question of Balance
    4. Long Distance Voyager
    5. Days of Future Passed

I might have but I didn't. Anyway, I didn't participate in that thread. Aside from that sometimes it's actually ok to start a new thread!

All mentioned are certainly in my top 5. A couple of days ago I got the Magnificent Moodies 2-disk box set that has all of their pre-Days R&B stuff. If you like British R&B, this is great stuff. Denny Laine had such a good voice for what they did. And you could see the beginnings of Ray Thomas on the road to being a great crooner.

Lost Chord and Children's Children are not far behind.
That was my list then, and I don't think it has changed.

I've noticed Octave never appears on these "Top Moodies albums" lists. Is it that bad? I've only heard it once, and thought at the time it was somewhat inferior, but I don't remember violently disliking it.

Octave is pretty sub-par. "Driftwood" is okay, and "Steppin' In A Slide Zone" is... also okay. Some people really like it, but I personally never saw it as a particularly great track. The rest of the album sounds like a collection of under-developed, uninspired, and over-produced songs. If you watch the Classic Artists DVD "The Moody Blues", the band go into some detail about the less-than-pleasant circumstances surrounding the making of that record. They went to California to record it because Mike Pinder was living there, and in the end he said no to going out on the road again. This caused quite a lot of acrimony. That, and there was some serious flooding in the area where the studio was, which as you might imagine was a pretty big problem! All of this is reflected in the lack-luster and rather tired-sounding results. They redeemed themselves 100% with the most excellent Long Distance Voyager just a couple of years later, so all is forgiven!

My list, though the rankings after the first two will be different on any given day:

    1. To Our Children's Children's Children
    2. A Question Of Balance
    3. In Search Of The Lost Chord
    4. Toss-up between Every Good Boy Deserves Favor and Seventh Sojourn
    5. Toss-up between Long Distance Voyager and Days Of Future Passed

I also enjoy On The Threshold Of A Dream and The Present quite a lot.

The Present: I heard it a few times, i think I still have it somewhere on cassette. It's an album on which i found very little to like, and a big drop in song quality after Voyager, which only has one song that I find slightly boring, the rest are top quality.

The Other Side of Life affected me much the same. The title track is pretty good, but that was about it for me.

    -------------------------------------

In the other thread I did an analysis of the poll votes to derive an aggregate ranking, and the winner, by a narrow margin, was "To Our Children's Children's Children."
