Roger Waters Amused To Death reissue/remaster

Been reading this report of Waters 92 solo album being re released and remastered in June, with new artwork.

    http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/0...h-new-artwork/

Always my fave of Waters solo albums, and for me the most Floyd-like.

Will be interesting to hear how it sounds...the original sounded great, I remember that it was recorded in something called Q sound, a kind of early 3D sound mixing effect.
I only clicked on it because I thought it was going to be something more interesting...

You know what - he's right about this one. It didn't get the recognition it deserved. It is a magnificent album. The best album by any Floyd member post The Wall.

I actually never loved it, but it's good. But it always sounded fine to me - unless there's new material I probably wouldn't rebut it.

I loved ATD...liked Radio Waves (though it did seem to have a rather weedy production, and is kind of Waters-lite)...but I have never been able to get into Pro's and Con's.

Maybe time for a re evaluation of that last one...

Two words about Amused To Death and WHY it is as great as it is to this day:

Yeah, let's re-evaluate Pros and Cons. It's still shite. End of re-evaluation.

Totally disagree. It is a very good album IMO and Clapton adds his signature bluesy guitar work throughout.

Yeah, I never understood the hate for Pros and Cons or Roger Waters in general.

And that won't change with this. It's always been about the brand for the general public, and he didn't have that brand.

My feelings about the album is that it's the best of his three full 'rock' albums but still too wordy. I think Waters and the other members of Pink Floyd were better together, although I play the latter's two albums more for pleasure. But this does have some notable peaks- 'What God Wants', 'The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range', 'It's A Miracle' and the savage chorus of 'Perfect Sense'.

The Q Sound thing, I've never really noticed what difference it made on a stereo.

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

Too bad Roger couldn't get Jimmy Page to play on one of his albums. Then he could have the distinct honor of playing with 3 of The Yardbirds guitarists.

What chance an "Amused to Death" tour? - it's ironic that Roger's best solo album was never played in full live, yet the previous two were.

    Can't see it as likely.

For me personally (and I really love the album, in my top 5 of PF and PF-related albums), it is a killer studio album. The production, atmosphere, samples and textures (not to mention the near-impeccable performances from Beck amongst others) don't quite translate into a live setting. From the '99 tour, the only song that really convinced me live was 'Its a Miracle' (if he'd given 'Watching TV' a stab, I think that would've also worked well).

I can't imagine anyone being able to replicate what Beck did on The Ballad of Bill Hubbard or the outtro on the title track though...some of the most incredibly moving guitar lines *not* played by DG on any PF project.

That said...if he did take it on the road, I'd buy a ticket no questions asked
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I did, & still do, enjoy ATD. A subliminal sign that I enjoyed it is the fact that I'm always surprised when the 2nd-to-last song begins. "What? It's ending? So soon? I was just getting into it." That said, I find Marv Albert's voice a bit tiresome. Maybe someone else on the re-master?

It's a shame RW hasn't enough new music in him that he is forced to rely upon touring The Wall & re-issuing ATD. I'd be very interested in a release of new material.

Amused to Death is my favourite of all Pink Floyd solo. Just slightly ahead of On An Island and About Face.

When ATD came out I recall Waters stated it was very comparable to Dark Side. Not so much musically but quality wise (or something to that affect).

    Jon

I remember when this album came out being in the break room at work. "What God Wants Pt 1" came on the radio, and within 30 seconds everyone else was demanding that the channel be changed.

Yeah this. Waters needed Gilmour and Wright for melodies. Too often his work comes off a tuneless poetry. There are some great songs and some truly great guitar work on Waters solo stuff but for me there just isn't enough music on these albums.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

To be honest, I never fully warmed to Roger's solo albums. Hated Pros & Cons, which sounded like leftovers from The Final Cut. Radio KAOS was probably my favorite, but I felt that Amused To Death was a mixed bag.

I've always considered this to be a kind of musical commentary, not so much song driven but still having a music foundation. I believe this was done on purpose and I still find the results having a kind of hypnotic feel. A great album to hear under the cans as well.

I think there is plenty of melody on Amused to Death.

Me too. I love it. Pros & Cons is also very good. Radio Kaos sadly is a big let down.
