Thread: 31st Annual FIMAV: Magma, Deerhoof, Nels Cline Singers, Satoko Fujii, and more!

31st Annual FIMAV: Magma, Deerhoof, Nels Cline Singers, Satoko Fujii, and more!

FIMAV announced their full line-up (but not schedule) today and it looks pretty awesome. Along with the previously announced Magma we have:

    JEAN DEROME « Résistances »

JASON KAO HWANG « Burning Bridge »

SUUNS & JERUSALEM IN MY HEART

    DEERHOOF

JOSHUA ABRAMS « Natural Information Society » with HAMID DRAKE

    THE INTERNATIONAL NOTHING

    LAIBACH

    INSTANT PLACES « Sleeper »

    OVO

DIEB 13 / ISABELLE DUTHOIT / FRANZ HAUTZINGER / MARTIN TÉTREAULT «where is the sun»

    MARC RIBOT CERAMIC DOG

    JACK DUPON

    HANS TAMMEN THIRD EYE ORCHESTRA

    AKIO SUZUKI / AKI ONDA

    THE NELS CLINE SINGERS UNLIMITED

LINDA BOUCHARD « Murderous Little World »

ERIK FRIEDLANDER « Claws and Wings »

    KAZE

Magma, Deerhoof, Nels Cline, Josh Abrams, and Satoko Fujii's Kaze project are pretty much all essential. Derome, Ribot, and Friedlander should all be good too. Really nice to see some Ottawa content (Instant Places). And I'm pretty sure I've heard good things about Jack Dupon but can't really remember where I've heard the name before. I've typically attended the Saturday and Sunday portion of the festival in recent years, but this might be the year I have to go for all four days.

    Edit: More info at http://fimav.qc.ca/en/edition/home/.

Jack Dupon are a very excellent, sorta psychedelic-but-modern, French band. I saw them a couple of years ago. They reminded me a little bit of Gong circa Camembert in terms of 'fun factor' without actually sounding anything like Gong.

I know! Promisses, promises, right? Robert and I have been discussing heading over there to see Magma at the very least. I've never seen Satoko Fujii or Eric Friedlnader , amongst the names that I know, so maybe I should *seriously* consider going this year.

I'm treating myself and going the full festival pass route this year. It will be a great way to spend a long weekend with bonus points for no border guards between Ontario and Quebec

How does this fest operate? It's general admit I see, are seats for the shows easy to get? Long line-ups? Are there standing shows? I'm thinking of a passport to the entire festival. Thanks

All shows are general admission. Never heard of a show selling out. Most shows are at the Colisée des Bois-Francs (where the local junior hockey team plays) but they're not "arena shows". The space is basically divided into one large room and one smaller room each with cabaret-style tables and chairs in the middle and some standing room (with taller tables) around the perimeter. Getting a seat has never been a problem for me, but sometimes I deliberately chose one of the standing room tables on the side if I suspected it was either (a) a show I might not want to stay for, and/or (b) a really loud show I didn't want to sit too close for.

Last year they also had a new hilltop venue (the Arthabaska Pavillion) just on the outskirts of town and with really awesome views of the surrounding countryside. It's a standard auditorium with row seating. I think this was a temporary location while a new downtown arts centre was under construction (on the same site as the former movie theatre where concerts also used to be held), and I don't know if they will be back there this year or if the new downtown building will be finished.

There was always plenty of free parking at both venues and plenty of time to move between venues in between shows. The Colisee and Pavillion are not walking distance, but if they move back downtown then it's only a 5 minute walk between the Colisee and the old/new downtown site.

Then you will need beer. One can buy all kinds of local micro-brew at Bières et Saveurs du Terroir. Location is very close to where you pick up tickets

Full weekend schedule has been published...

    Thursday May 14th
    8pm Jason Kao Hwang
    10pm Jean Derome
12am Suuns & Jerusalem in my Heart

    Friday May 15th
    1pm Linda Bouchard
    5pm Instant Places
    8pm Deerhoof
    10pm Laibach
    12am OVO

    Saturday May 16th
    1pm Dieb 13/Dothoit/Hautzinger/Tetreault
    3pm Third Eye Orchestra
    5pm The International Nothing
    8pm Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog
    10pm Nels Cline Singers
    12am Jack Dupon

    Sunday May 17th
    1pm Erik Friedlander
    3pm Joshua Abrams
5pm Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda
    8pm Kaze
    10pm Magma

I went for the full festival pass but still might skip Thursday to save the additional night in the hotel. Last year I paid $215 for 8 concerts, so $285 for the three days is still a good deal even if I skip Thursday.

Yes, it's one of the numerous projects from Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii and her trumpet-playing husband Natsuki Tamura, in a quartet with a second trumpet player and drummer from France. There's a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bmyr0xremA.

The "early bird" price for full festival passes ends on Monday. Tickets for individual concerts should go on sale shortly after that. They've never done day passes but have always offered a discount if you buy tickets to at least three shows.
