There no way you will be able to do this without skipping over hundreds of fine albums. Seems most of us like the usual suspects, and all of us threw in a few oddballs. Even Phil Ochs has a fan!

I thought I'd get some grief for not including Sweethearts Of The Rodeo & Notorious Byrd Brothers! There's a lot of love around for those two but they're my least favourite Byrds albums. Not shite at all just not as good as the others.

Byrds apart (for me, the first truly great band), pre '67 there's not much I really enjoy but I'd make an exception for Simon & Garfunkel's records & Tom Pacheco's '65 debut Turn Away From The Storm.

It's somewhat of a common thing around here, but I get slightly annoyed with that sometimes too, especially when not only is the band/artist not listed, but the album title is listed as an acronym (like TLLDoB or ItCotCK). It works okay in a thread about a particular band or artist, but in lists such as these, it can get a little frustrating because not all of us are prog experts. I'm not losing sleep over it, but it would make life a tad easier.

I've actually struggled with this in the past, compared with '...Pillow' and 'Crown...' which strike me as more even and tuneful. Obviously I need to give it another listen.

It contains some of JA's most difficult material for sure, especially stuff like "Rejoyce". Baxter's was very much the first brainchild of the later so proficient Kantner/Slick orientation of the JA spectrum, and I find it quite fascinating how anyone whose career was burgeoning would go straight out on a limp and create something like this. It's a highly uncompromising record for December 1967, that's for sure.

I have a hard time deciding on Pillow, Baxter's or Crown as the best of this "classic" threepiece; they are all so different. The former has the most charm and positive vibes, the middle is their most "progressive" statement while the latter has their most powerful and eerie tracks overall. With Volunteers they are already heading into the 70s (IMO), albeit with some great tunes. And I'm not much of a fan of Bark or Long John Silver.
