Thread: Your 'single' favourite Rush track?

    Your 'single' favourite Rush track?

The new Prog magazine has an extensive Rush feature. Renowned musicians are asked what their favourite song is?

Steven Wilson chose The Camera Eye
    Steve Rothery chose Tom Sawer
    Lawrence Gowan chose Limelight
Pat Cash (tennis player) chose Cygnus-X1 Book 2
Dave Brock chose Between the Wheels
    and I choose The Trees

    What's yours?

Kudos to Brock for choosing Between the Wheels, that's a favorite of mine and some days I might choose that. This really could change often for me, and it's pretty interesting to see what some well known people chose. The Camera Eye - I don't really even like that song much!

I think I have to go with: Limelight.

Some of the epic earlier stuff I need to revisit because while I like that stuff, I've listened to Rush from the 80's onward much more overall.

Impossible to just pick but I'll play.

    Overture/Temples of Syrynx

It's two songs but part of one epic track...

What is this, some sort of witch hunt for a single Rush song? I would have to use kid gloves to overcome the enemy within, spend two thousand one hundred and twelve dollars (big money) on a passage to Bangkok, arrive in lakeside park and expect to find Xanadu nestled among the trees.

What do you want, something for nothing?

Nobody's Hero? Come on, Arjen! That song practically ruins Counterparts.

Two good choices. Natural Science and Jacob's Ladder I can listen to and not get tired of. My favorite might be Vital Signs from Moving Pictures. It finishes off a really great album.

So, so hard to eliminate all the rest to arrive at just one but mine would most-likely be: Subdivisions....followed closely by: Something for Nothing, YYZ, Between the Wheels, Natural Science, and about 20-30 others.

Impossible. I love all eras of the band, and the 80s 'synth' period is probably my personal favourite... but with a gun to my head, I'd say "The Spirit Of Radio" is the single best track they ever did. When they explode into that second verse with "...all this machinery making modern music...", it's pure joy.

Limelight. One of the best opening riffs of any song ever.

Plus one of the best guitar solos. Have to say Spirit of Radio is a good choice too.

I like it. I've always found the lyrics very effective and I very much agree with the sentiment. And the second verse will hit home to those of us in Southern Ontario who remember Paul Bernardo and his horrific murders of three teenaged girls in the early 90s. Peart had known the family of one of the girls when he was younger, and incorporated that memory into his lyrics.

Yes, great track! Side two of Moving Pictures is often overshadowed by the more popular and radio-friendly side one, but it is just as good!

Even though its overplayed, I think I have to say "Closer to the Heart." People have mentioned worthy contenders so far, though. "Limelight" has always been a favorite, for instance.

    Cygnus 1
Cygnus II (the whole album actually)
    Natural Science
    Jacob's Ladder
    Tom Sawyer
    YYZ
    E-A-T

It varies from time to time, but the one that tends to always rise to the top is "Natural Science". Just an amazing piece of writing, arranging and playing.
