    Magma in North America....

They'll be in Quebec City the evening before the Terra Incognita Prog festival. One other concert in Quebec, apparently many in the US.

If they play in the US. That's right around the same time as ROSfest, which I kinda had my mind made up I want to go to. We'll have to see what's up.

FIMAV rarely announce acts until close to the festival. Last year they didn't announce until mid-March

Hey, anyone going to any of those Japanese dates? I wonder what airfare to Tokyo costs.

How does a band such as Magma afford to do a tour of North America? Wouldn't they lose money?

They don't. They get offered a festival show (in this case, I'm guessing that would be the Victoriaville deal) and if they can fit one or two other shows around that, they do it. But an actual "tour", as in spending four weeks in a mini-van crisscrossing North America, is pretty much out of the question, as I understand it.

Magma draw reasonably well and, more importantly, in the greater world they also do well amongst people who don't give a rat's ass about 'prog'.

If they want to do it and plan carefully, they could pull off a small east coast tour, I think.

Looks like they are going to be in N America twice according to the schedule on the 7th site: 2 - 18 April in the States, and then at least two dates in Canada on the 15th and 17th May, with the UK dates between. (Therefore, the Victoriaville date is independent of the US dates.)

At the moment, that sounds like that might be wishful thinking for those US dates. Presumably, they have "tentative dates" planned. And I would bet dollars to donuts it's only going to be a couple or a few shows, not a full blown tour of any kind. I'll be happy if I'm wrong though.

Another one reason for me to go to Quebec City's prog fest that already announced a great line-up.

If Magma comes anywhere on the East Coast between NC and MA, I'll do my best to make it happen. Goblin managed to make it happen so hopefully Magma can as well...
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I spoke with their US booker. Nice guy. He's the same guy who did Goblin.

There are going to be shows, but there may not be a LOT of shows. We'll see....

I'm guessing Magma doesn't quite have the same "brand recognition" as Goblin, what with all the Argento horror films/cult classics to use. Nonetheless...I'm encouraged that Magma is coming at all.

A few years back there was actually a discussion between a couple of the "usual" arrangers here in Oslo about whether these two bands would make for an intriguing pairing. Never happened, though. Still, Magma drew considerably more people here in 2007 than Goblin did last year. Then again, Argento was never too big a name in Norway.

It'd be awesome if Magma scored venues and crowds as strongly as Goblin did. Goblin's tour included things like a HorrorCon performance, and at the two shows I saw, most of the peeps around me were clearly film fans rather than 70's Italian prog fans.

The booking agent who did Goblin did a terrific job IMHO, and hopefully he will create a similarly-successful tour for Magma, whatever the scope may be.
