    The Pineapple Thief - Magnolia

I appreciate that they are not everybodys cup of tea on here. And, dependent on what your view point on prog is, whether or not they are a progressive band. But for those who do enjoy them this is to let you know of the release of the latest offering from The Pineapple Thief. It is called Magnolia. It comes with a bonus disc which is more than excellent and is on the KScope label. And for those who remember the old Harvest label, I liken them to KScope for its eclectic mix of bands.

I've been a big fan for the last five years. Heard the album from start to finish last night and I was floored! Bruce Soord says his emphasis is for shorter songs and on the songwriting with Magnolia. And IMO he has overwhelmingly succeeded. The last album "All The Wars" really didn't do much for me, but "Magnolia" seems to somewhat harken back to the roots of the band with less bombastic electric guitars and more acoustics. In the past I've always liked the longer pieces, but every song here works well. And they are still very symphonic and progish. Alternate prog is what I'd coin them. Great, great release. Possibly their best. Congrats to them. God I wish they would tour in America. Really fantastic band! ...way up!

I am waiting for my double disc set to drop through the letter box but have streamed it a few times last week and very much enjoyed what I heard. I very much enjoyed All The Wars although I know that it has had a mixed reception, but my favourite is probably Tightly Unwoud. There are so many good discs in their catalogue.

I totally agree with Toothyspook regarding the Kscope label, it really is a place of variety and consistent quality, and very much akin to labels such as Harvest back in the day.

If you are thinking of getting this it comes with a tasty bonus disc. Stocks of the bonus disc are apparently running low in some distributors. So dont think about it for to long.

I got my copy of the Deluxe edition with bonus disc from Kscope today in the mail and I'm listening as I type. A stunning and superb album with an amazing production and sound! On first listen, the standouts are "Simple as That", "Alone at Sea", "Magnolia", "The One You Left To Die", "Sense of Fear", and "A Loneliness". Their absolute best album without a doubt! Recommended.

Edit: Add the last track of the main album "Bond" to the list. Heck, the whole thing is fantastic! Kudos to Mr. Soord for such a beautiful, stunning and well produced album.

The bonus disc on the Deluxe edition is a must have to. I like how Bruce Soord make the acoustic renditions of the main songs of the album and make them sound different and unique while being the same song if that makes sense. More than acoustic, they sound symphonic. Of the two other original songs on the bonus disc, I like the guitar solo on "The Fins Fan Me", and like the acoustic guitar playing on "Steal This Life". This Deluxe edition is totally worth it.

Rounding out the The Pineapple Thief fan club, I got my copy in the mail the other day, just haven't had the proper time to listen yet. Reviews are promising. I'm sure I will enjoy.

I wonder when the last reissue (Abducting the Unicorn) will see the light of day...

Flippin eck, just took a look at the UK album charts and Magnolia is sat at number 55.

With recent chart success for this along with Steven Wilson, Anathema, can only be good for prog as a whole cant it ?. People who catch on to artists like this will hopefully have a curiosity that will spread to bands within the same genre.

I haven't heard anything from this album, and I have been lukewarm over The Pineapple thief's music to date. Still, it's good news when anything with a whiff of progressive cracks the album charts these days!

On a side note, I note with amusement that there are two albums in the top 10 both called X, sitting at No. 4 and 5 respectively.

I received my double disc set today and I am really loving it, a great package and so much more power to the music than the stream I was listening to last week. I love the acoustic discs that accompany these releases, they really throw interesting light on the songs, and the two non-album tracks are both excellent.

Heard it a few times in Spotify and decided to buy it. It is really a good record, second only - in my opinion - to Variations of a Dream, which I considered the best of all their ouputs.

"Variations" was the album that first made me aware of this highly talented band. Back in their earlier days they had another acoustic guitarist, and the band employed a much more psychedelic sound than their later releases, with denser, dreamier keyboard soundscapes. IMO all of their early releases are truly great, and each one a different experiment, a tradition it seems with all of their offerings. I also believe that Bruce Soord is a great, under appreciated artist, a huge talent. And the more I listen to "Magnolia", the more I love it. Excellent, without doubt one of the better prog album (or album with lots of prog influence) releases of 2014.

Big fan here. I don't have the new one yet, but I love most of what they do. I discovered them way back on the "Variations Of A Dream" album (I think that's the title) and have been a fan ever since.

The real treat with this new album is the bonus disc. Great acoustic work from Bruce Soord. I'm liking this more than "All The Wars" already. A consistently good artist.

From the Classic Rock Radio website:

"New album Magnolia, released via Kscope, has debuted on the Official UK Chart at no.2 on the Indie Album Breakers Chart and no.8 on the Indie Album Chart. Magnolia follows acclaimed 2012 album All The Wars and marks an important turning point for the band, as they expand their musical horizons into mainstream rock territory."

Very well deserved. This band deserves all the success in the world.

Any thoughts on this album a few weeks in? I can't believe how little response this thread has had, as this is a superior release from a band that continues to grow. Admittedly it is perhaps more song based than earlier times, but it has some wonderful songs and emotional performances, and deserves a wider audience.

I must admit that I haven't sampled any of the latest Pineapple Thief album - I will at some stage. I have heard a few songs from various albums, and liked some of them, others not so much.
I would probably appreciate them more if I was not already acquainted with Porcupine Tree - Pineapple Thief seem to me a little like PT-Lite.

At the time All the Wars was released, Kscope had four of the songs on their podcast; I liked one of them, quite disliked another and was neutral about the other two.

I'd be surprised if there are not samples from Magnolia on a recent or upcoming Kscope podcast.
