I blame Wynton, what was the question?
There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
Interesting. Every time I sample the first Amoeba Split album I'm just totally turned off by the vocalist/flute player. I just can't get by her, she sounds utterly out of tune to me both singing and on flute. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Yeah, I can see how you'd say this. I'm not sure I like it better than their first album. There are a couple of tracks I really like (I think the second one and the last one). The rest is a bit of a blur, but other than a few vocal bits I haven't heard anything I really don't like. But none of it has jumped out at me in a major way either. I'm giving it more time to sink in, but my early impression was that it was pretty decent. But maybe closer listens will change that.

SETI, the Chilean outfit, has released it's 3rd album, "Bold Travels". Although not as good as their last album, "Discoveries", still quite enjoyable.
Pretty awesome sounds by Nadir! thx for posting gonna check more out now
enjoy this free single, we released yesterday... with a featured sax

This might be the last album Jon has released on CD, because his label Alchemy Records (named after David Sylvian's album) only looses money. Too bad. Wonderful album again.

I can understand that. The best portions are definitely the instrumental ones. Idk if it's just I like that album that much or I'm prone to ignore such things, but IIRC the album has much more instrumental showcase time than it does singing. Also, I'm pretty darn tone deaf so all this out of tune stuff goes over my head.
As for Seven Impale...I feel like there is alot less meat on the bone, so to speak, with their latest. Doesn't seem to have the musical muscle they flashed on their debut.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.
Never let good music get in the way of making a profit.

A tone deaf music fan? Maybe that's how to get into Avant Prog!
You're totally right, I noticed that as well and that's why I don't like it as much as their debut. But I just spun it, and there are a lot of really good parts. At ~67 minutes, It's a bit much for one sitting, I found myself getting a bit worn out after a while. I wonder if this is one I'll eventually pare down a bit and make a CDR of my favorite songs. But I agree with you, not as much muscle on this one, and I don't like it as much as the debut either... but I still really enjoy parts of it.

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
I have, it's one of my favorite releases from last year. I guess it helps that it's split across two CDs, neither being overly long to me. I rarely play them back to back. I also really like the music on Madeleine, so the time perhaps passes more quickly for me.

Huh. Well, I am loving the new Seven Impale. It's the first thing that I've heard by them. I did immediately check out the previous album on bandcamp, and while there are some good musical ideas, it doesn't seem as strong overall, to me. Also, the vocalist seemed to be stretching in the high range on every song, which put me off a bit. The new one has great production, some killer parts, superb genre blending, and the interesting vocals, which remind me of Mont Campbell from Egg, are much more to my taste. Did they get a new vocalist, is someone else in the band singing, or is the singer just singing lower, and with a different flavour, this time out?
neil
Not sure Neil... I enjoyed the previous record but when I sampled the new one, it was the vocalist that threw me off. But then again I like 1 minute of vocals for every 5 minutes of music...I"ll have to sample the whole thing.

The new one by KYLVER came out last week and it' a very solid record:
Here's the only track I could find to embed.

Well there you go, everyone has a different take. Some of the vocals on the the new Seven Impale remind me at times of Jim Morrison. I guess I could see the Mont Campbell comparisons too.
The lineup of the band is the same on both albums, so it's all the same players. The difference I notice is that Erland Vottvik Olsen was not credited with vocals on the first album, only Stian Okland. So I think you're hearing two different singers on this new album. I think Erland Vottvik Olsen is the one who sounds like Morrison/Campbell. Personally I vastly prefer Stian Okland who sings on the debut, and it's the moments where Olsen is singing that I was referring to as the vocal moments I didn't like. Not uniformly, but at times I think he just starts to sound a bit silly. Just my opinion.
I have the debut spinning now since I'm home sick. I'll see if it's held up for me relative to me memory of it.

It seems to me the most interesting music is coming from new classical recordings these days. As a case in point, the Mike Rossi album "160" reminded me of Zappa's early synclavier work, as well as Philip Glass-type RIO.
Thus saith the label Innova:
Pianist, percussionist, and composer Mick Rossi is known for his progressive, diverse work that has been described as ”an exemplar of the cross-fertilization between jazz and classical music worlds...the smile-creating mix of humor, surprise, gorgeous sounds and virtuosity…Bartokian and energetic.” (All About Jazz / NY Times).

I'm sure it helped. And yeah...I suppose that's probably unusual. But I find much to enjoy in music beyond the tonal things so I never really thought too much about it.
As for Seven Impale...yeah...it does seem to stretch on forever. There were many moments I would have sworn it was near the end of the disc and it was only a half or two thirds of the way through. (Generally album length isn't an issue for me, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the material...) I'll listen a few more times before the end of the year I'm sure...I'm just not sure if it will make much of a difference.

I don't know when exactly this one came out, but I enjoy the recently bought the 2DVD/CD-set Way Back Home from the Steve Gadd Band a lot. The CD has 8 tracks from the 12 on the DVD. The DVD has a wonderful 5.1 mix which has the instruments nicely positioned like they are on stage. So Michael Landau in the right-back.
