Terje Rypdal - Whenever I Seem To Be Faraway

Am in a major Rypdal listening phase right now, mostly his discs with The Chasers right now but ... what's up with Whenever I Seem To Be Faraway's availability on cd? I can only find it at what I would call extortionate prices which I am not willing to pay.

It used to be widely available from ECM, but I haven't seen one in a long time. Got the vinyl myself, so...

Fabulous album; this and Odyssey are my faves by a long shot.

Love this album! It was my introduction to Rypdal, and may have been my introduction to ECM--I got this and John Abercrombie's Timeless around the same time.

As for its availability, it does seem to be out of print as a physical CD. ECM themselves list it as a download only.

I was lucky to buy my copy used for a very reasonable price. It's become one of my favourite albums.

Can't be objective since it's the first record I got from Rypdal and it hit like a ton of bricks. Not the easiest CD to find, but you might end up thinking it's worth a few more bucks than most.

Interesting, Aymeric! Of course, there is that distant Canterbury link concerning Rypdal's haunting guitar shrieks against Wyatt's vox on the wonderful Hapless Child by Mantler.

I always thought it strange how some reviewers seem to put the side 2 piece a bit down, as I personally think it has some truly puzzling parts. It isn't "rock" or arguably not even "fusion", of course - yet it's captivating in atmosphere and texture.

It's one of those albums that really left a mark on me. I was really drawn into the mood and atmosphere, and the cover art really is a clue to what your going to hear.

Maybe the "Canterbury"-ish elements on side one did help in the initial appeal, but I have come to enjoy the band on its own merits. The 1975 Radio Bremen broadcast by Odyssey is probably in my Top 5 favourite boots by anyone, and why Manfred Eicher never put it out (or never let anyone else release it) boggles the mind. Well, we have "Unfinished Highballs" and that's a fantastic performance in its own right, but not quite as stupendous as that Bremen show.

The symphonic music on side two is equally sublime in a totally different way to side one. I love the whole thing.

It's so good, it's worth settling for the download if you don't have it already.

Bought this when it first came out, based on the LP's beautiful glossy cover art. Now I have over a dozen of his albums, all on CD.

Oh my God, yes! Earth shattering. This is one of the greatest discs of all time. All of it. Though sometimes I think Odyssey is even greater, especially Over Birkerot. Listen to the interplay between Rypdal and Hovensjø...

I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

You are right to think so. "Over Birkerot" just totally slays me.

My favorites are What Comes After and Terje Rydal s/t. They are flawless albums.

One of three of my favorite Rypdal recordings, along with Odyssey and What Comes After, which came out before Whenever I Seem to Be So Far Away, and is a little earlier in terms of his ultimate development of multiple rubato lines hovering over propulsive grooves, but still an essential recording if you want to hear how he got from point A to point B.

For me, his '70s recordings were uniformly excellent though, including the solo recording After the Rain, Descendre, Terje Rypdal and, especially, Waves

Just got this off dime. There's a series of videos on Youtube of the same show, and intrepid googlers should be able to find a downloadable copy, but the first one I found sounded like it was sourced from slightly crackly vinyl.

    Listening now...

I sought it out specifically for the tone poem on the 2nd half, and after finding the physical media a bit hard to track down, settled for an Amazon download. Definitely among my favorite albums from Rypdal.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

One could almost buy a turntable for the price some japanese sellers charges at amazon

ECM has a Rypdal overview CD that has part of this album among others.

That's actually part of the :rarum series, a collection of 20 releases where the artists picked the tracks. Some are broad looks at That's actually part of the :rarum series, a collection of 20 releases (10 released in 2002; another 10 in 2004) where the artists picked the tracks. Some are broad looks at their entire discography (Garbarek and Jarrett, the only two to get double-disc sets), others focus more on specific things - Rypdal being one. It's a great release (and great mastering), but isn't fully representative of his total breadth.. Still, not a bad place to start.

I have an earlier Rypdal ECM compilation called "Works". Like ":rarum", ECM did comps called "Works" for many of the major ECM names like Towner, Garbarek and Jarrett.

I just picked one up from Ebay - based on the reviews here. I have one other Rypdal (can't remember which one) but love his playing.
