Also, Chaka Khan was into prog... sort of... well, not really so much...

Later in Rufus' career he abandoned mellotron drenched epics (A) for very poppy music with Earth Wind and Fires horn contingent (D). Rufus sold out for commercial success.

I actually saw this Rufus, supporting Elton John at the all-day Wembley concert in 1975.

There is also a current Australian "indie-dance music" band called Rufus, they recently had a chart-topping album.

I don't rate either band as A, though that song featuring Chaka Khan wasn't too bad.

Rufusized and Ask Rufus are two of the best albums of the '70s, in my opinion.

Rufus also released three albums without Chaka Khan, but I've never heard those apart from a couple tracks that didn't impress me.

I like Chaka Khan's singing. I'm pretty obnoxious about the fact that I don't really care for female singers but I like the soul sistas, Aretha, Gladys, Chaka, (Glenn Hughes ). No, I don't have any albums by them, and doubt I'll be breaking down my front door to rush out and buy their albums, but I've always liked their style. I remember Rufus in the 70s. Tell Me Something Good was all over the place in 19 seventy...whenever. Chaka made her living in the UK for many years doing session work (singing backup, accompaniment, etc.). Her talent is in demand. Good for her.

Chaka was a force of nature back in the Rufus era. She could belt it out like Aretha, but also sing softly in her lower register just as soulfully and subtly as Roberta Flack. Her first two solo albums in 1979-80 are also great, but the quality dropped off a bit after that--as it did for so much R&B in the '80s.

Let's not forget that Chaka did an album of jazz standards with Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Chick Corea called "Echos of an Era." That's kind of a proggy connection, I suppose.

Chaka really could hold her own in the company of soul belters like Aretha imho. And for a big ol' girl (in later years) she was kinda smokin'.

I liked some of her 80s hits too: I Feel For You, Ain't Nobody, Once We Get Started (I think that was the title), Higher Love (okay, it was a Steve Winwood hit but her backup vocal made that song a hit, imo. Without her vocals on that song it's not a big hit). She was/is a badass.

well then , instead of fighting a,nd insulting , ut would be nice if both of you rated all the Rufus albums you've heard on Gnosis and complete their discography, because hardly anyone has put any ratings so far
