    Your favorites from SPAIN

I have a weak spot for progressive music made from Spain. Within the European context, the music seemed to draw frequently from other countries, but also with their unique input, ranging from Flamenco to Basque folk. They also had a 'golden era' ('75-'79) that was much later than most of their European counterparts.

    Some of my favorites:

Los Canarios - Known mostly for their ambitious double album "Ciclos", which draws on the music of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. For me, it's one of the best fusions of classical music interpreted for rock. It's pompous, but I like it that way.

Cai - These guys are like the Spanish Le Orme. The first two albums are both classics imo, with many high spots. Accessible. First album was issued a few years ago with a bonus disc.

Goma - Only one album to their credit as a group, but it's one of my favorites. It's all over the map, jazz, rock, Flamenco, frenetic, dynamic. A lost classic for me.

Companyia Electrica Dharma - I can't say I dig most of the catalog I've heard, but I really love Diumenge, which belongs right smack dab in that "forgotten jazz-rock" album thread.

Gotic - Known for their single album "Escenes", well described as a "more jazzy Snow Goose". Anyone who like Snow Goose that has never heard this, should jump on it.

Jordi Sabatés - Ocells del Mes Enlla. The title track sounds like it should be something off of Jan Akkerman's Profile, Finch, or such. Sabates' catalog in general is hit or miss, but the hits are great.

Feliu + Joan Albert - Much lesser known (from what I recall) until its CD issue. Great record, mostly atmospheric but this track rocks:

I should probably add my favorites from the Basque region...

Enbor - Had a pair of really nice albums, but their 2nd, Katebegiak, is my favorite, as it perfectly blends symphonic rock and folk.

Haizea - Had a pair of albums much more in the folk range. But more than anything, I've just found them relaxing.

Itoiz - Had a pile of albums, but prog fans generally would lean towards the first three. Ezekiel gets Camelesque Snow Goose comparisons from time to time.

The Basques are definitely my favourites when it comes to Spanish music. One name I never see mentioned is Benito Lertxundi. I recently picked up two of his albums, Zuberoa / Askatasunaren Semeei and Altabizkar / Itzaltzuko bardoari. He certainly deserves a place up there with Haizea, Errobi and the like.

    quite rare, really...

On Gnosis, only Dirk rated them (not every album is entered either)

Syn-Phonic doesn't cary any albums either

But I liked what I heard, thanks (most likely, he'll soon be on ProgArchives)

I admittedly haven't heard much at all but I really like the self titled Eduardo Bort album from 1974. It's psych prog with some symphonic moments and a bit of mellotron in places.

One of my personal favorites is Amarok.

Also, just a reminder that ProgDay will bringing Kotebel to the U.S. on Labor Day Weekend. When it comes to Spanish prog it does not get much better.

Amarok was brilliant at whichever ProgDay it was that they played. Somewhere around here, I have a photo of me with the entire band.

Probably not what you're thinking of, but I believe the band Evolution were from Spain. Good early 70's hard rock music. If I remember correctly, they actually covered 21st Century Schizoid Man. I've played a few songs of their one album on Journey Of The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

The Crack album is exquisite. The Granada albums are quite underrated, a mix of fusion, orchestrated symphonic prog and folk music. There's others, but those pop into my head immediately.
