Miles Davis
Soft Machine (Elton Dean era)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (the original lineup)
Ornette Coleman
John Zorn/Electric Masada
Depends on what you call fusion
Virgil Donati-In This Life; Simon Philips-Symbiosis; The Aristocrats-Culture Clash. Then there is Planet X; Derek Sherinian; Alex Argento; Felix Martin; Spaced Out; Antoine Fafard; T.R.A.M. That's just from top of my head.

"please do not understand me too quickly"-andre gide
Hmmm....by "edgy and agressive" do you mean more experimental, free jazz-ish sort of thing...or do you mean something more aggro, as in "rawkin'"----wailin' hot guitar type of stuff???
For the former, I'd recommend Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, James Blood Ulmer, Zorn's Electric Masada, Post 3rd/Pre Bundles Soft Machine, maybe some Steve Coleman, maybe Power Tools.
For the latter, I'd recommend Ohm, Fire Merchants, The Aristocrats, Antoine Fafard, Spaced Out, Special Providence, and some Japanese bands like Fragile, Exhivision, FazJaz.

Guitarcentric, but devoid of metal influences (like some of the above suggestions, not that there's anything wrong with that):
Need more clarification Homburg ... do you just want shredding, or do you want spontaneous chops and avant garde, or do you want jamming, from a rock or a jazz standpoint, or something else.
Anyway, here's a few suggestions:
- anything with Gary Willis on it (he is a center point guest for a lot of fusion)
- Liquid Tension Experiment
- any McLaughlin
- some Chic Corea
- later Miles
- Tribal Tech
- Zawinul Syndicate, Weather Report

And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
I'd suggest Phlox from Estonia and One Shot. Amazing smoking fusion.
