What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)
Panzerballett at the Baked Potato the night before they played BajaProg.
Hackett at BajaProg.
3 Friends at BajaProg
Locande dela Fate at BajaProg.
Steve Wilson at Nokia.
Keneally at the Baked Potato.
Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale" with Jack Black playing the Soldier tempted by the Devil, played by veteran character actor, Michal Lerner. At the Leo S. Bing Theater.
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
Maybe my third or fourth post of 2013!!!
I know I saw more than these bands last year but my memory is dust...
Kansas - FAC 40th anniversary concert - Pittsburgh (traveled 3500 miles for that concert and saw a Pirates game too!)
Steve Hackett - CalProg - La Mirada, CA
Musical Box LLDOB - CalProg - La Mirada, CA
Squonk (I think that was there name) - Los Angeles, CA
Passed on Yes, Rush, Black Sabbath, and a few others in 2013 (just plain burnt out on seeing those bands live for the 50th time)
Missed RosFest and BajaProg due to multiple deaths in the family during March and April last year
Coming up in 2014:
Musical Box SEBTP - CalProg - El Segundo, CA
Kansas - La Mirada, CA
Dream Theater - Los Angeles, CA
Passed up - Black Sabbath at the Hollywood Bowl
Here is what i can remember:
Rosfest 2013- amazing weekend especially The Flower Kings and Riverside.
The Flower Kings and Neal Morse Band in PA
Rush- My 3rd Clockwork Angles show. Since its the second leg, I would have loved them mixing it up from the first. It wasn't meant to be.
Coheed And Cambria- headlining gig at Radio City Music Hall and the Uproar festival with Alice in Chains and Jane's Addiction.
Alice in chains with Soundgsrden- awesome.
Buckcherry- I saw them headline and play at a festival. Just a fantastic hard rock band.
Queens of Stone Age- at MSG. My friend had an extra ticket for a Madison Square Garden show. I am glad I went.
Aristocrats in NYC- wow!!!!!!!

Renaissance at the LeVoy in Millville, NJ
Ihsahn, The Obsessed and Iniquity at Maryland Death Fest
Monster Magnet at the Trocadero in Philadelphia
Secret Chiefs 3 and Goblin at Ottobar in Baltimore
"Alienated-so alien I go!"
Of the 2 I attended, I'd say Bob Dylan (Palace Theater, Louisville, KY) and Dick Dale (Mercy Lounge, Nashville, TN) were equally good. If one gets an edge above the other, Dylan is the better singer.

Shows that stood out for me this year :
Book of Knots and John Zorn day (Moonchild, The Dreamers, Electric Masada, chamber ensembles, “Song Project” and church organ solo) - Victoriaville
Steven Wilson - Montreal
Cactus - Ottawa Blues Fest
Esmerine - Ottawa
The Night Watch (local Ottawa band) - Ottawa
HBC (Henderson, Berlin Chambers ) - Playa Del Carmen
My top concerts this year included:
Baja Prog ( w/ special mention to the Hackett portion of the festival)
Rosfest
Steven Wilson
Opeth
Due to a heavy gig schedule I only attended about ten shows all year but these were far and away the best
Right now, I can't seem to remember all of the 30 or so shows I saw. Some that immediately stick out for me are:
Jimmy Webb - great show and finally got to meet and hang with Jimmy
BOC - Resorts in AC. amazing show and set list though the worst venue ever
UFO - Sellersville. These guys actually continue to get better and better. Another great show and set list
Uli Roth - Sellersville. Another great Sky Academy and an amazing 2 plus hour show made up almost entirely of 70s era Scorpions tunes
For me it's
Cormia at ProgDay
Goblin and Zombi at the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, in December
Los Straitjackets, Southern Culture on the Skids, and the Fleshtones at the Sinclair in October. Saw the Fleshtones 35 years ago at the Rat in Boston. They were top billed then, and now they are third-billed to bands that didn't even exist back then. They are just as annoying now as they were then, but I still like them. Anyone who does the "Monster Mash" in Spanish is alright by me.
Lou

Black Sabbath (huge fun)
Saw other acts but not really a banner year. A big non rock event was seeing Wagner's Ring Cycle at Bayreuth, a bucket list thing. For rock, hoping this year is better. I have Hawkwind tickets, Kraftwerk tickets, Yes tickets, Jon Anderson tickets and that takes me to April only. Looks promising.
My live highlight was "curating" a show with my band (3RDegree) and 3 other bands:
1. IZZ (trio version)
2. The Tea Club
3. Half Past Four
HP4 came down from Toronto to do the show. It was a highlight to play the show and spend time with the bands and attendees. It was a lowlight that on a summer Friday night in Times Square (and incredibly low cover) brought out so few people despite the strong lineup but that's been covered in 10 other threads!
Heart, Hackett, Richard Thompson, Ian Anderson, Project/Object come immediately to mind.
Sleeping at home is killing the hotel business!
