Guns N' Roses- Yea or Nay?

I feel very much in the minority by not really liking them. There're 3 songs I do like: Patience, November Rain, & Better (off Chinese Democracy)
Maybe it's Axl's voice. I'm not sure. But Appetite for Destruction is widely seen as the album that "saved rock" in the 80s. Not for me, it didn't. Just didn't speak to me. I suppose a big part of that is because at the time, I was still in the early throes of discovering prog. GnR were hardly on my radar.

    How 'bout you?

I enjoy about half of their catalog. Appetite is great. I actually can't stand "Patience". I feel it just wanders along and is boring. The Illusion discs are bloated and one disc would have been fine. I rather fancy "Chinese Democracy".

They had the potential to become the Led Zeppelin of their generation but they fucked it all up.

    Nay.

I like a few of their radio hits but not enough to actually buy a G&R album. There are too many other groups I'd rather listen to.

I thought "Sweet Child" was a great song and Saul is a superb guitar player but besides that, a giant "meh" from me.

I was never much of a fan. I like Slash's playing, but could never get past Ethel Merman singing in a hard rock band.

I've always thought that if venereal disease had a voice, it would sound like Axl.

If like me you were in your 20s in the 80s in the US,UK,Ireland or Germany you loved Appetite for Destruction. There was no one in my circle of friends and colleagues who didn't like it.

Use Your Illusion I and II are also both really good.

But none of their other albums before or after UYI were any good.

I don't know that much of their material. Just 'Welcome to the Jungle', "Paradise City" 'Sweet Child of Mine" and 'Patience'. The first 3 I dig. I love 'Jungle'. I might be on an island, but I think Axl is a great singer. At least what little I've heard/seen of him onstage on Youtube.

Axel & Roine Stolt should do an Ethel Merman tribute album.

GnR's sound was a retro relief in 1988 from all the samey hair metal bands that were on MTV.

Exactly, grunge was a breath of fresh air. I loved Pavement, Senseless Things, Mudhoney, GnR, Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana.

So, they gave an opinion, and you didn't. That's what. As for me, I had Appetite and Lies on cassette as a kid. As I grew, I thought they were shit. However, my opinion changed once I got the Use Your Illusion CDs, and my opinion changed. The Illusions CDs may be bloated, but some of those songs are quite unexpected. I bought Chinese the week it was released, but I only played it once since then.

GNR are nothing to do with Grunge.

They were in the UK. Grunge, sludge, sleaze they all got thrown into one big pile.
