Thread: So, when did Neil Peart first cut his hair?

  1. #1

So, when did Neil Peart first cut his hair?

I realize this is a pretty meaningless topic, but when I first saw Rush in November of '77, I know for a fact that Neil had cut his hair short. But, in many photos afterward, it's still long. I remember distinctly being bummed that I missed seeing them "when all of their hair was still long." I've never seen pictures of him with his hair tied back, but could that have been the case?

Any Rush fashion aficionados out there able to clear this up?

Wow, I have a hard time remembering hair length but I saw Rush in 76th and I'm pretty sure they all had long hair at that time.
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

Once he realized that all of his magic powers disappeared with the hair cut, he had to grow it back.

Maybe he did have his hair tied back. That's the only thing I can think of. I've seen Rush many times since 1976 and I don't ever remember seeing him with a short haircut until the early eighties. He started to keep his hair shoulder length and shaved off the 'stache around 1980.
Neil had a receding hairline early on. I know what that's like. Once it begins to happen, you have to start taking it up at the back and sides if you don't wanna look like someone who spent three years in twelfth grade. It's either that or get yourself a pair of Zubaz and move on to the next decade.

The Moving Pictures tour is the first time I remember... can't remember about Permanent Waves but I think it was still long.

I pretty sure I remember Alex with relatively shorter hair when I saw the Moving Pictures tour.

No, I saw them on PW and it was cut by then. "Hemispheres" (the one tour I missed during their best years) still shows it long. I have a pretty damned good memory, too. I recall arguing with my brother that they played "Discovery" during 2112 at that Nov. '77 show. His argument was that they didn't even play it on "All the World's a Stage," when they were touring 2112. It wasn't until years later that I got a recording of a show from the same week in '77 where they played it that I was able to prove it to him.

Once again, in the grand scheme of things, this is all trivial.

That never prevented active discussion on PE.

No idea about Rush, but I didn't have a single hair cut in the 70s. Cut the locks in July 1980.

You know for a fact, yet you still have doubts?

You mean he had the magic power of the music in him?

Wait. Wrong Canadian band. Never mind.

    Nicely done.

(and also what is engraved on my iPod..."I got the magic power of the music in me").

My statement, though not clearly contructed enough for you, was that his hair appeared short, but, I suppose could have been pulled back, although I've never seen him do that. Does that help?

    Thank you for your contribution.

I thought that Neil and Alex got their hair cut in late '80. Maybe '79 for Alex(judging by the group pics in the Permanent Wave CD jacket).

Your statement is a clear contradiction. That's your fault, not mine. If you're all that concerned about Peart's hair at the time, then I would suggest that you check your ticket stub and try to corroborate the date with online photos from that period, of which there is no shortage of.

You're brilliant. Why didn't I just PM you, in the first place?

Yeah, my statement was poorly worded, but most people here seemed to be able to comprehend it.

I think I also made it pretty clear that I was not "all that concerned" with it, with statements like "I realize this is a pretty meaningless topic..." and "Once again, in the grand scheme of things, this is all trivial." But, clearly, comprehension doesn't seem to be your strong suit.

    Maybe you should have.

Oh, I understood everything, even the "poorly worded" stuff, and I answered your question in my first post from my perspective as a longtime Rush fan, and who has personally witnessed most of their career. I believe that's what you asked for. You've actually brought up this subject before and it was answered then. What else do you want?

Didn't he have one of those stupid "tails" in the "Big Money" video? Or maybe in the "Distant Early Warning" video?

No problem, dude. But next time don't ask the question if you don't want the answer. Just call it the "Rush Hair Thread".

My guess would be sometime in 1980. I'm pretty sure it's long in the Hemisphere's booklet and also in the Permanent Waves booklet. I'd have to look again but don't know where those cds are at the moment. In the "beyond the lighted stage" dvd there is an interview with Geddy and Neil (can't remember if Alex is present)where Neil's hair looks short. I'm pretty sure that was from 1980 but not sure exactly when. PW was released very early in 1980.
