I have maybe a third of that list.
But seeing Awake at #2 is effin awesome.
I was a true believer in this one from release date and as I type this, I am listening to the demo version of The Mirror (which has Lie embedded in it sans lyric).
Lots of agreement on others and others to explore - Thnx!!!!

No Cannibal Corpse or Death?
Cool list.
I honestly have not spent enough time with Death, which given I enjoy Cynic and and lot of Technical Death Metal, is kind of hard to believe. I know them by reputation and heard some songs here and there, but still have yet to really give them a more honest shot. Although even say Psychotic Waltz or Voivod are bands I enjoy some of, but have never gotten highly into. PW especiially, and I enjoyed their last record from a few years back.
Cannibal Corpse like Gorguts are kind of staples in Extreme and Death Metal. I actually quite liked the Gorguts album Obscura, when I checked it out many years ago, although did find it sounded a little dated. But CC are kind of like Slayer or some other bands...Morbid Angel, Venom who I know are important, influential in the evolution of Metal, but I never really found a desire to pursue their music. Most straight Death Metal I just find okay but without something else included like over the top musicianship, or adding some other elements like Jazz or choirs or samples, or something, I generally have not been all that interested in.
But I would never question their importance. Cannibal Corpse are massive in the history of Death Metal for sure.
thanks for the mention. Yeah Awake oddly enough was the 1 of the 3 Dream Theater albums, when I got into them in 1995, I wasn't as into. But over time, it grew on me a lot and became my favorite, and then sort of has been that for well over 20 years now. It just has everything I like from Dream Theater. The heavy side, the songwriting, the musicianship, and the atmosphere. Kevin Moore's involvement, while he knew he was leaving the band, can't be understated enough.
Thanks, I figure you probably would know a lot of the stuff on there.
I have been meaning to make this and the other big list of (Modern Progressive Art Rock albums, which I did back in December. Maybe I should share that 1 as well?..lol) lately, just to kind of get them in print. Time sometimes feels like it catches up with you. I mean everyone has their favorite albums lists and what not, and I have posted them before, but with this one I was going to make 1 list of just traditional clean-vocals Prog Metal and 1 list of Extreme and Experimental Metal, but it sort of came across as a bit Homogenous; like taking 8-10 bands catalogs mostly and ranking and mixing them. So, taking both lists and combining them made it a bit less repetitive.
I actually intend to do the same thing with Songs, which on paper, seems like a massively long winded headache, however, I've somehow of late been able to start doing the same thing, mostly for Songs of the Year. (I'm working on a list for 2005 actually this weekend). It's not simple/quick, but I used to hate trying to rank songs (whereas albums were usually much easier),
but am finding it not so hard using this ranking engine: https://www.pubmeeple.com/ranking-engine
I guess maybe I'll follow-up once I compile a songs list for this stuff.

A nice recommendation list of instrumental black/doom acts. I'm streaming the rýr album right now and it's scratching my itch.

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I can only take so much doom. It makes me start walking real slow with heavy footsteps.
"Who would have thought a whale would be so heavy?" - Moe Sizlak
Would have been better if there was a "heavy covers" thread for me to post this (wait, there is, but it wants the original to be not heavy, oh well), since "metal" is not really the main point of this post (even though some of these songs below are indeed metal). Why did I not start a thread? Because I didn't want to.
This actually took hours, so I'm thinking no music/PE for me for a week or two, will be back afterwards, to some degree:
Well I picked these *20 heavy covers* among the hundreds I heard on youtube over the last few years. Now sharing.
To help narrow down,
1) excluded any performance if youtube was saying "4 years ago" or older for its upload date, so these are *from the last 3 years only*,
2) only included *'full-band efforts'*(excluding unfortunately things like "vocal covers" where someone is singing over a prepped backing track such as from original recording), with the exception of the Bartok one which simply had to be included in this list because it's another heavy recording that I like and yes I know it's technically not quite a cover.
Whether it was "prog" or not didn't matter.
And the ordering approxly reflects my preference among these particular great performances, if that matters. And I should add this is a list of essentially upbeat music, *no doom or gloom here*, *no downers*, I think.
Okay I'd guess a few who enjoy heavy stuff here have not heard a few of these performances so here goes:
A Japanese band (Unlucky Morpheus) displaying an excellent precise and accurate violin performance (and excellent performance from the rest of the band too) playing the Malmsteen song Far Beyond the Sun:

Bartok string quartet with drums added, this sounds great:

Leonid & Friends plays Stormbringer; apparently they mainly play Chicago songs, not sure; this is what I listen to when I have to shovel sidewalk snow, reminds of the power of nature:

Jansen & Poort knock out of the park one of the only few "technically a Musical song" songs I even bother to tolerate; this here is a great heavy arrangement where the star is the absolutely amazing well-controlled and dramatic vocals from both vocalists; and we can see that the vocalists in that small couch audience are in agreement with that for sure:

Cult of Personality; almost did not put this into the list but the band here (LLB) played really well this song that does have a good groove and guitar parts (definitely not counting the two uninteresting solos which were each a squandered opportunity by Living Colour IMO but the song was nevertheless popular which was good for them):

I guess some people like to live in their own little esoteric bubble. Semantics dude.
Wikipedia is your friend, thanks.

Actually (in a non-combative tone) I like the list and agree that most of those are metal, but very few of them are extreme metal.
That said, just like "what is prog" ... you could ask "what is extreme metal"?
My loose definition of extreme metal is that it's somewhere near the intersection of (1) angry/extreme attitude that goes beyond heavy metal, and (2) cookie-monster growls. Most albums in that list don't comply with that definition, though several do. (Some of the Opeths, BTBAM, etc.)
But regardless of sub-genre, I enjoy most albums on that list.

Duncan
I agree. It's subjective or semantics.
And I explained this in at least 1 or more of the videos on YouTube in that I made initially 2 lists:
-1 list which was basically Metal that used all-clean vocals (or no-vocals/all-instrumental)
-And then another list of albums that used either all non-clean or a combination of Clean and (Hardcore Punk) Screaming, Shrieks, Growls and/or Guttural vocals.
And I was originally intending to make 2 separate lists, but especially the all Clean/Instrumental Metal album list came across a bit homogenous to me, so I decided to just combine the 2 lists into 1 big list.
But in just counting, and removing Mastodon I suppose, I counted 89 of the 201 albums have were at least some vocals that were not clean.
Whether that means they are or are not "Extreme" to others? I guess doesn't matter to me. It's an umbrella term in my mind.
But from my taste and perspective, using non-clean vocals is 1 rather significant part of what I call or consider "Extreme" Metal.
But this list is 1st and foremost a "Progressive" (or "progressive") Metal list. But as I know we've talked about over the last 15+ years, "Progressive" or "progressive" Metal has changed (evolved) in that time, that it doesn't just sound derived from Dream Theater and Rush.
Even just with the use of different, non-clean Vocals alone makes it clearly MUCH different.

I agree with all of the above
And as one who doesn't mind - I'm okay with just 1 list.

mnprogger, about #1 on your list: Is there a Perfect Element II?
Angra - Holy Land is another great album!
yeah Holy Land is a huge favorite of mine. RIP Andre Matos of course.
well "Scarsick" was identified as "The Perfect Element Part II" by Daniel Gildenlow, and as polarizing an album as it is, I have it at #143.
Does it live up to being the 2nd Part of The Perfect Element? I recall like many fans when that came out from Daniel, being rather baffled. And while there are few references to TPE Part 1 in Scarsick ("Kingdom of Loss" namely just based on the title and some subtle references), the two albums musically are a lot different.
The thing is, I have a pretty distinct memory about The Perfect Element Part II and Daniel, from an interview. It was around 2002, 2003-ish I think. I'm not sure if it was before Be came out, but I kind of think it was. Some journalist asked him about TPE Part II, and he said there were plans for it, but the band needed to wait to be able to have the services of a specific Orchestra that Daniel wanted to use for it.
And mind you, this was NOT the group of musicians for Be. Be was a totally different thing and group of musicians, because I know much of the interview was about what Pain of Salvation was working on at the time and the concept and process of writing and making Be. Per, when Daniel and the band were working on Be, it was basically what they could at the time per the Orchestra they wanted to work with was not available.
At any case, when hearing about that, and of course loving TPE Part I so much, the hopes for TPE Part II were super high. And then when Scarsick came out, so many fans did not care for it all that much. But with the comment from Daniel it was TPE II, it kind of deflated it and what hoped to be TPE Part II even more.
I wonder if anyone has asked Daniel more about this per it's been like 20 years since then. Maybe someone has, but if not, someone should, per it is a shame that the Orchestra and what he seemed to have in mind for TPE Part II back then sounded potentially amazing.
Mind you, unlike many fans, I do enjoy Scarsick per why it was included in that list. It has several songs I enjoy. It does not include the work of Daniel's brother Kristoffer, which I do kind of wonder if it had some impact on how it came out.
That and also the potential project Daniel did vocals for, what was I recall a 27 minute song with Jim Matheos and Mike Portnoy. That ended up being OSI and Kevin Moore of course chopped it up and did the vocals. I wonder if it was demo-ed ever and if Daniel still has recordings of it. It could have been amazing, just on the surface. But who knows if we'll ever get to hear it, if it does exist. That would be another good question for Daniel, but someone needs to be able to bring it up. Maybe me? lol, if I ever felt the motivation to ask him about it, or maybe even interview him for my blog or YouTube channel. The trouble with that is of course, he is going to want to talk about current things, new music, etc which makes sense. But fans like myself still can't help but wonder.
