BEAT - Belew, Levin, Vai, Carey

Looks like this is close to being announced. I had heard rumblings.

Is this a tour, or just a one-off? Everything seems to point to San Diego if you google for the Thread title.

Humphrey's is an awful venue. It's a small shell soundstage on the hotel grounds. Everyone in the neighboring rooms is gonna get blasted!

The parking situation gets real Mad Max out there. If you're actually staying at the hotel, no prob. One year, I watched Lisa Lampanelli from my balcony.

There's a reddit thread about it where there's talk about how Vai is going to "blow Belew off the stage", which I suppose could makes sense if you look at music as some sort of sporting event.

The only think Vai has over Ade is this ridiculous-looking thing.

Hopefully, he doesn't blow him onstage.

I played there a few years ago and loved it. They let us fly in a few days early, so we had a couple days of just hanging by the pool drinking rum. People apparently drop anchor in the harbor to listen.

And wow, if this show hits Chicago,I am THERE!

When I saw Steve Hackett a few months ago some guy came out to announce it. I was wondering when/if they'd make it official.

One thing though - when it was announced I don't think Danny Carey was the drummer - it was someone I'd never heard of but apparently was one of Zappa's guys. So you know he's good. Anyone remember who it was?

Joe Travers? He worked for Frank, but as an archivist, not a drummer. However, he later worked as a drummer for Dweezil, and for other FZ legacy projects.

David Logeman? Not that well-known as an Zappa drummer - he became Christian, and so avoids the FZ world.

I thought it was originally Vinny Colaiuta?

I am a huge Vai fan, but he seems like an awkward fit for that cool, precise “math guitar” approach that Fripp favored with 80s Crimson. He would be better in the “Belew” slot, but Belew is all ready part of the project.

My hope is that they somewhat re-imagine the music and not try to be a cover band of music that already has a gizzillion versions out. This lineup could make things sound very different and that would be a cool thing.

Vai is a monster musician, and he may surprise us all by playing Fripp's parts either verbatim and/or Frippy with a side of homemade Vai sauce. Fripp's parts are definitely not too difficult for him...Zappa's music is definitely more challenging plus Vai plays in his own masterful guitar god crazy style. I think it's going to be fuckin' awesome.

Right on, I hope this too. Interesting arrangements could make this so killer. I like the potential dichotomy of Vai and Adrian....plus how great seeing two Zappa alumni play together!
